To understand the ways that the economy has shifted and how our strike tactics must also shift, we compare the last two general strikes that took place in the US—both of which, conveniently, occurred in Oakland, California—in 1946 and 2011.

The 2011 strike is especially instructive.
A Tale of Two General Strikes
What would a general strike look like today? We explore the last two general strikes to take place in the US—both in Oakland, in 1946 and 2011.

Have seen many variations of this & broadly agree—but the part that struck me in the moment wasn’t “this is a microcosm for how America sucks” — it was “this is a microcosm for trying to behave democratically & respectfully of one another in a complex, evolving situation with things we can't know.”
i feel like the viral bus thread resonates because at every step of the way you're like "ok surely this will be resolved shortly, any second now," which seems like what all the passengers are also thinking. then the fact that the situation doesn't resolve and the bus just keeps going is an Allegory

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.

The Trump administration has completely abandoned enforcement of the Fair Housing Act, a key Civil Rights era achievement. That's left Kenneth Hansbrough, a blind wheelchair user, trapped in an apartment that puts his safety at risk. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

The initial chaos of layoffs has been followed by a concerted effort by the Trump administration to halt the enforcement of the Fair Housing Act.

There was no "hiking shoot." She went hiking and someone took pictures of her from far away.

The Post is trying to frame this as hypocrisy but it's literally "a woman said she doesn't like being shot by paparazzi and yet she was shot by paparazzi."

Periodic reminder that direct action is a fundamental form of protest.

It is the original form of protest.

To refuse to accept the status quo, to intervene in an effort to shift power from the oppressor to the oppressed is protest.

We're primarying John Fetterman.

Last week, Fetterman again sold out working Pennsylvanians. He was the deciding vote for a Republican budget bill that will strip healthcare from over 400,000 Pennsylvanians.

We deserve real working class leadership in the Senate, not a Trump-enabling Democrat.

There is a very good reason why the thing I say most consistently about situations like this is "the violent rhetoric policy is my least favorite policy to write and enforce, and the policy that creates the most upheaval among the userbase when it is applied"!
"bluesky will suspend you for anything vaguely resembling a death threat" is maybe the single most consistent moderation policy they have I don't know why anyone is surprised by this one

yes, even if it's a reference to song lyrics
The account owner of @sarahkendzior.bsky.social was suspended for 72 hours for expressing a desire to shoot the author of an article. The post, made 11/10, stated: "I want to shoot the author of this article just to watch him die." 1/2

(4) Trump and the Republicans don't have an advantage over Democrats because they *better understand heartland Americans.*

They have an advantage over Democrats because they created their own universe of propaganda outlets, and then went out and bought all the mainstream outlets.

Duh.

Portland's attitude towards protesting is very much "all the cool kids are doing it" so it's not within my direct experience to have to weigh it as a potential reputation ruiner, but a lot of people did that calculus today and were brave anyway and I just think that needs to be said more often
