It’s a problem when the people who endeavor to run the university hate the university.

YES.
For all the olde librarians: ChatGPT should be like Dialog, where you have to pay per search. The charge should be equivalent to the environmental damage of the query. 📚

Me. My love life. You get it.
I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

we used to build household shrines to Going On The Computer and it's no coincidence that as we abandoned these we started straying further from god's light

"Academic libraries have evolved far beyond being mere repositories of content..." opens an email from Clarivate.

I always find this dismissal of the core function(s) of the library depressing and frustrating.

As if our primary mission is neither enough nor relevant. Neither is true.

As a Libra, this is true….unless/until we realize it’s the nth time you’ve pulled this nonsense. And once we’re done with you, we’re DONE done. We don’t even remember what you did. Hell, we can’t even remember your NAME. Consider yourself warned 😇
I’m a Scorpio.

Don’t let me play in your face and act like shit squashed—I still don’t like you, UGLY! 😭

Glad my graduate alma mater cut 60 degree programs in subjects that require people to think so that they could offer this. Looking forward to living in a world full of Prompt Engineers.

Been a librarian since 2011. Last yr, got offered an amazing position that aligned with my skills/goals; thrilled, excited, over the moon. Had to turn it down bc no matter how I did the math, I’d be financially DESTROYED by the housing costs. Big R1. Salary just too low, even as a solid mid-career.
Librarianship has never paid well enough for the education required.

In this moment - where the rent is impossible to cover solo - it is even worse.

So, here it is. Thanks to a new state law that was NEVER DEBATED, Indiana University has committed itself to abolishing majors in African-American/African Diaspora Studies: American Studies; Art History; French; Italian; Religious Studies etc. DOZENS of majors. www.ipm.org/news-section...
Indiana public colleges cut almost 20% of degrees
Public Indiana colleges and universities have eliminated 19 percent of their degree programs to meet requirements added to the state’s budget, according to the Commission for Higher Education.

French Open captions are capturing the players’ grunts as “oh.” I like to imagine they’re actually uttering surprised/delighted “oh!”s as they observe the quality of their opponent’s shots appreciatively.

Musing: one side effect of constantly defending (eg an institution or a political party) against disinformation and bad faith criticism is that you can become habituated to ignoring all criticism (as bad faith), which makes it difficult to learn, adapt, grow, and address your actual weaknesses.
