My tribute to Dave Ball of Soft Cell and The Grid airs today on NTS  at 12pm PST. Dave’s music was a huge influence on my teenage identity and also the sound of Dark Entries. I was lucky to work with Dave on a reissue of “Blue Pyramid” his Jack The Tab acid house song from 1988. 🙃 nts.live

It's the anniversary of John Berger's bday.
His essay Ways of Seeing, a companion for the TV series, won the Booker Prize.

The show is engaging, intelligent, and a great entry point art history/criticism.

Hello there! For my first post on this here social network, here's a new thing I've been working on, a live sampler where you scrub through the sound by pulling a string. It has a filter!

Self-styled political debate influencers often use the rhetorical technique "Gish gallop," whereby a "galloper" floods their opponent with rapid-fire, disconnected, often inaccurate arguments.

Anthropologist Eugenie Scott first used the term to describe the debate style of creationist Duane Gish.

Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Visualized in a Computer Animation
Even those of us who only took half a music appreciation course in college know about the impact of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, the orchestral ballet that nearly caused a brawl at its debut.

So if you visualize LLMs as not "artificial consciousness" but "an artificial connection to the collective unconscious":

1. They become philosophically way more interesting
2. It's way more forgivable they suck at math
3. It becomes extremely clear they are infinitely less useful to capitalism
A thing I am starting to embody in my extremely weird healing journey, and that a lot of AI people don’t seem to get, is that consciousness is *by far* the least interesting or impressive part of human intelligence

Today's fun etymology nugget from @jesszafarris.bsky.social is that the word "wilderness" comes from the Old English "wild-deoren," or "wild beasts". Later, "deoren" came to be specifically "deer". Middle English added the suffix "ness" (place of), so it literally means "wild deer place".

Protip: If you need to make a QR code, and the site requires you to register/login, then it's trash and don't use it. The wife just got caught by one of these. A QR code just encodes data, and if you're creating one for a link, it should encode the link directly. I recommend justaqrcode.com
