In aggregate this map doesn't show much, but if you're curious about where college radio exists on FM (gray for other types of stations), this is it, sliced by when the station debuted: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

Before Thanksgiving, I turned in a draft of my new book for peer review. Here's how it went and some lessons I learned about writing/editing.

In writing LFTU, I realized the rise of FM and the 1960s/1970s didn't fit well with the arc about college radio in the 1980s/90s I wanted to focus on....

From R.E.M. to Nirvana, Live from the Underground by Katherine Rye Jewell traces how college radio shaped American music—and politics. A deeply researched history of rebellion, rhythm, and the fight for free expression zurl.co/5ehvB
Katherine Rye Jewell Tunes into America’s Culture Wars in 'Live from the Underground: A History of College Radio' - That Eric Alper
Bands like R.E.M., U2, Public Enemy, and Nirvana found success as darlings of college radio, but the extraordinary influence of these stations and their DJs on musical culture since the 1970s was anything but inevitable. As media deregulation and political conflict over obscenity and censorship transformed the business and politics of culture, students and community […]

Back when Fellowship of the Ring came out, I said something about how pretty Legolas was, and my aunt just looked at me, serious, and said, “SEAN BEAN. You’ll see.” I now see.

Editing process the day before submission: 1) schedule a new oral history for the book that is due; 2) rearrange some furniture; 3) edit footnotes; 3) make dyspeptic comments online about how AI is not a pedagogical crisis, it's a labor crisis; 4) matcha latte time; 5) edit footnotes; it's 9 a.m.

The day I arrived at my new college in 1982 I had a couple of suitcases, a box of sundries, a badass stereo and four feet of records in the back seat. I soon found my place at KHDX. In many ways I’ve never left. Long live college (and community) radio!📻

College radio has always had a cool, hip factor. It’s a culture built on passion and discovery that benefits both students and listeners. Long live the stations running on duct tape, borrowed records, and a pure obsession that's defiantly alive.

And this gives me a chance to humble brag that my kiddo, a college freshman, is a novice college radio DJ (Because she is so cool).
