It's National Radio Day! One of my favorite Tad Dorgan drawings in my collection is this 1923 look at the early days of marketing radios as consumer products. "If this is the radio that plays the jazz I'll take it."

The thread below is why I love Bluesky: I posted a baffling postcard, then @blagueplague.bsky.social asked about the origin of the phrase, then I speculated, and then @auctionaugur.bsky.social found the source, confirming my speculation. Love that shit.

"Nannies." Plural. More than one nanny.
VAN HOLLEN: Did you in fact make the visit to Epstein's private island?

LUTNICK: I did have lunch w/ him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation. My wife was with me as were my 4 children and nannies. We had lunch on the island. That's true. For an hour. We left with all of my children

The three kinds of celebrities in the Criterion Closet:
1. The actual film geeks.
2. The phonies who try to sound smart but their obvious picks and vague statements betray them.
3. The stars who only pick movies they're in or by people they've worked with.

Today's etymology surprise is the word "kidnap." It sounds like something that would have been concocted in either the 19th or 20th century, but no! It comes from late 17th century thieves' slang! I didn't expect it to be that old.

I asked our web team to add a required "confirm email" field to the form, which they did, and now I know why those exist and they are not dumb inconveniences. Well, they are, but they are evidently NECESSARY dumb inconveniences.
Aaaargh, I've had two queries today stymied by people providing misspelled email addresses. I always try to search, but was unsuccessful in both cases. Drives me crazy! People! Pay attention while you are filling out forms!
