While some news stories will talk about many other firsts for the forthcoming Artemis II mission, I wanted to focus on this being the first mission to the moon with an actual toilet and how that works.

Social media is essential for outreach and communication. So why should a single bad actor be able to destroy it? 🔭☄️

We don't think that should be the case, and that's why we're building The Astrosky Ecosystem - starting with the Astronomy feeds.

We now have a paper about our project! #astrocode
The Astrosky Ecosystem: An independent online platform for science communication and social networking
While almost everything that astronomers study occurs in the vacuum of space, astronomy itself does not `happen in a vacuum'. Interactions between scientists, as well as outreach to members of the pub...

I second everything John said here. I already knew Greg Ketter from DreamHaven Books was a good person so this really isn’t surprising, but at 70 he shouldn’t have to be walking through tear gas on a Minneapolis street to try to protect his neighbors. Abolish Ice.
Remember the other day when I was saluting my friend Greg Ketter, owner of Minneapolis’ DreamHaven Books? This is him the following day. Greg will never say this, so I will — now is a great time to buy books from DreamHaven. Support Americans who stand up vs. 🧊. dreamhavenbooks.com

US federal agencies were gutted in 2025, losing ~20% of their staff relative to 2024.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

As various groups roll out their analyses of 2025 temperature records today (spoiler alert: it’s hot) , NOAA and NASA are not holding the joint press conference they usually do to announce their recap. Data will be released but without the open chance to talk to agency experts that usually exists.

[Thread] The Expanse ended 4 years ago today already!

While waiting for a sequel and the Laconia story (I believe it will happen🤞), it's never too late to (re)embark in this great saga across the solar system.

And then The Expanse continues in other forms, as we will see in the following posts.

@noahshachtman.bsky.social with a must-read on how the US bungled its efforts to get back to the moon--meaning China is poised to beat Trump at a space race he declared (after laying waste to NASA, because sure).

UPDATE: #MRO and #MAVEN downlink frequencies are 6 MHz apart, so they should normally not interfere with each other. However, the events we saw yesterday and today as of timings and frequency doppler agree with Horizons/MRO exactly. In the attached screenshots we can see “spurious” and “harmonics”.
