NEW: After doctors sent her home with a racing heart, Ciji Graham came to believe the best way to protect her health was to end her pregnancy.

But new restrictions in NC and nearby states made finding an abortion provider difficult.

In a state that had legislated its commitment to life, Graham spent her final days struggling to find anyone to save hers.

Excellent thread from Daniel, unfortunately I've had a similar experience (as a lot of us have). I was in A&E for almost 24 hours a few months ago (yes really). It's a horrible experience and it's why NHS fetishisation jars (not the fault of the staff obviously).
1) I just want to do a thread on the last few days and what’s been happening to me.

I spent 7 hours in A&E on Monday. I’ve spent 10 hours in A&E so far today with zero end in sight. Take what you want from the thread about the current state of the NHS.

Yep. Easy to forget party members are more radical than MPs and Truss was the choice of the former. No reason to believe Labour members are any more in line with the median voter.
This is the kind of thinking that led to Liz Truss becoming PM

This sounds too much like Defund The Police. It should be possible to demand accountability without dissolving immigration enforcement, something most Americans would not support.
"The country badly needs a Good Act abolishing ICE."
With that well-phrased sentence, @shikhadalmia.bsky.social wraps up her compelling essay on the highly toxic ICE, which has been toxified even further with Border Patrol personnel.

• Never in his constituency

President Trump is rapidly moving this country toward authoritarianism.

Part of that is creating the myth of the “Great Leader” by naming public buildings after himself—something dictators have done.

Today I introduced a bill with @vanhollen.senate.gov & @alsobrooks.senate.gov to stop it.

'In 1968 Enoch Powell was sacked from shadow cabinet...today he would be touring podcast studios in UK & America raising money for a new party.' Depressingly true.
In a diverse society there have to be non-negotiable democratic norms citizens abide by & the state MUST defend & protect.
The case for a new Britishness
The social contract must be revitalised or populists will replace it with something much worse. That means citizenship should involve allegiance to a shared way of life

It's politicians on the Right defending X, the same way the same politicians defend the tabloid press - both mediums seen as politically useful is the main motivation.
Is it possible that certain politicians defend X because "those on the other side“ criticize it? Has UK politics become so moronically polarized and binary that people would say the most absurd things simply because it is the opposite of what the others say? Is this a pathetic culture war issue now?
