Them: Hey, Marnie, how come you’ve been watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show?

Me: *gestures wearily at the world *

(adding in I will not consume anything post-apocalyptic any more; I just cannot)
Unless I absolutely must for professional reasons, I will not be watching your nuclear war movie. I will not be watching your incredibly bleak and depressing murder show. I will not be watching your artistic despair. It’s nothing personal, I just don’t order water when I’m already bailing my boat.

The No Kings March in Chicago is one of the largest gatherings I’ve seen here. Looking down from by the river, the crowd stretches for blocks down Michigan Ave and wraps around Wacker Dr. This video is from a few minutes ago and the end of the protest is nowhere in sight.

Updates about what's been happening in Chicago can be found mostly on Threads. If you have an account there look for independent news spots like Block Club Chicago, The Tribe, Chicago Reader, & WBEZ.

I'm told that nearly none of my friends or family outside of the city knows what's going on. Scary.

not to make this all about my own interests, but we NEED more people to discover audio dramas

not only do they rule, but they're probably one of the few entertainment mediums left that aren't mostly controlled by massive companies vulnerable to corruption/pressure

the most successful ADs are indie

I have no desire to go to Lollapalooza again, but this city absolutely needs a Brigadoon-esque appearance from the MERL. Or at least I do.
we don't anticipate this recurring any time soon unless we're able to expedite our Howl's Moving Castle aspirations and yeet ourselves to Lollapalooza or something

All fans of Bram Stoker's gothic novel "Dracula" know that part of the story is set in the Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby. But how many have actually been there?

Billy Joel was the soundtrack to three consecutive summers driving to and from rehearsals/performances with friends. I still have a soft spot for the boy who would play his songs on the piano at cast parties. I definitely knew I needed this doc.

Sigh. Same as it ever was. It’s lonely over here in AD land, but I wouldn’t be anywhere else.
It has become inescapable to me over the years that podcast journalism has a real difficulty engaging with audio fiction.

A bit like literary critics forced to figure out how to contend with writing about seasons of television.

But fiction is a huge part of podcast ecosystem.

Adam Scott (almost certainly) and Jon Hamm (maybe!) could both grab Emmy nominations next week. But for my money, this will always be their greatest cinematic achievement. (No offense, @benstiller.redhour.com.)
