I don't think Oliver is going to the US any time soon.
It's difficult to improve on this summary.

It's gas generation that sets the price of electricity almost all the time in the UK. Renewables are cutting not raising our bills and reducing our vulnerability to volatile gas prices (up 30% last week).

The fossil industry stories always focus on the cost of renewable and decarbonising. The other side of the story is that costs have risen sharply for new fossil generation. Renewables+storage are cheaper.
If you think gas power is cheap, meet Keadby 2, the last CCGT gas plant built in Great Britain

It opened in 2023, after 5yrs of development, at a cost of £350m

Owner SSE says it would now cost 3.5x to build the same plant (~£1.2bn)

Putin must wish it had been as easy to overcome Ukraine as it has been to take control of America.
It must be said that Putin must be the most successful KGB agent ever. From a weak country he's managed to manipulate the president of the USA into destroying the western alliance. I can't see how anyone else comes close.

You’ve heard of Big Oil & Big Tobacco. Meet ✨Big Ag✨ the king of more.

More cows. More meat. More methane. More rainforest destruction.

All for profit. Planet gets cooked, truth gets greenwashed.

NEW: Coal-fired power generation fell in both China and India in 2025, for the first time since 1973. The drop came after record clean energy additions in both countries, and was the first time that clean energy was a major driver of falling coal power use.

I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

It didn't occur to me when I chose Frankenstein as my second book of the year, but bioengineering is at the heart of it just as was the case with my first read of 26, The Dogs of War by @aptshadow.bsky.social

Notable that the BBC seems very reticent to say anything about the numbers killed by Trumps illegal actions. We get numbers for Ukraine, why is this any different?

This is an interesting take. The end of oil is coming fast.
Country 9 in global oil reserves has invaded country 1 and arrested its president. Country 7 is under sanctions and its refineries are being destroyed. Country 2 is facing off with country 6. And there are riots in country 3. But oil is only $60/bbl. Maybe oil is not as critical as it used to be?

A bit of book nerdery to end the year. I read 62 books in 2025, 40 fiction, 15 non-fiction and 7 translated fiction. Slightly more female than male authors 32v29 (1 multi).

It's difficult to pick a favourite but in fiction I'm going to say The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler. 1/2

Most people know that going vegan will reduce their carbon emissions. It's less well understood that it's probably the single most important thing you can do to help biodiversity. Meat production requires huge amounts of land which could be returned to nature if everyone ate a plant based diet.
Join the New Year's Revolution 🎉

#Veganuary has inspired & supported millions of people to try vegan since 2014 – with participants from almost every country in the world.

It's free & inspiring & the recipes are sooooo good 😋
