Happy Valentine's Day!

In a restaurant with 20 other people, there's a 1-in-4 chance of a COVlD exposure today, if nobody is testing/isolating. Risk is higher in the Northeast and especially the Midwest, lower elsewhere.

Makes sense to start thinking about de-magafication now rather than when opportunity presents itself. If the US is going to recover from this period, it’s going to need some root-and-branch change, rather than the usual ‘swing of the pendulum, brush the last lot under the carpet’ approach.

Repeat after me:
An executive order is not a royal edict; it is not law. It is a direction to the executive branch as to how to carry out the law.

Also:
Key parts of Trump's last EO on elections have been stopped by federal courts, ruling that the President has no role to play in federal elections
Trump’s follow up post says he’s going to issue an executive order on voter ID.

“If we can't get it through Congress, there are Legal reasons why this SCAM is not permitted. I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order.”

new from me: it's interesting that one of the biggest roadblocks we're seeing to ICE buying up warehouses to convert into modern day concentration camps for detained immigrants is conservative NIMBYs (non-derogatory, for once) saying "not here, thanks"
Opinion | ICE’s warehouse detention centers run up against NIMBYism
A surprising number of Republican communities are coming out against the idea of ICE deportation facilities in their backyards.

"It appears that in planning for Operation Metro Surge, the government failed to plan for the constitutional rights of its civil detainees."

Meanwhile, we’re spending as much on policing as ever, the police are killing as many people as ever, “crime” was successfully used to normalize military occupation of US cities, and despite these trends being longstanding, the Trump admin is now touting these numbers to argue for more policing.

No matter what is behind the El Paso restrictions, we still need to investigate the huge political donations by private prison companies and the awarding of concentration camp contracts.🧵
“Right now,90% of people who are in immigration detention are in a facility that’s operated by a private detention corporation. GEO Group & CoreCivic are the two main corporations…and we’ve heard from their earnings calls that they’re very excited about getting more money and to expand detention.”

Congress is poised to pour tens of billions of dollars into more immigration detention, private jails, and border operations, plus new ICE partnerships with local police and sheriffs.

Concentration camps built by an administration that doesn’t believe in the germ theory of disease. What could possibly go wrong? Add easily preventable illnesses to the long list of human rights atrocities committed in the Trump-Miller ethnic cleansing campaign.
ICE has now spent over half a BILLION dollars just on purchasing warehouses around the country to convert into detention camps.

If these mega-camps are utilized to the full capacity ICE intends, they'll be the largest prisons in the country, with little real oversight. www.ajc.com/politics/202...

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE.

No money for kids.
No money for families drowning in medical bills.

But there’s always money for ICE. More cages. More raids. More cruelty.

That’s not a budget problem. That’s a values problem.
