Hi everyone! Thought I'd introduce myself to the Blue Sky community. I'm a clinical psychology post doc at Brown. I study implementation science, which looks at how to get treatments that work out to more people.

Here is NIMH

There were 51% as many new R01s in FY25 as in FY24.

Note the large increase in RF1 multi-year awards.

How are folks handling this change in NIH open access policies? Submitting to journals that comply with the new NIH policy for immediate release without requiring an open access fee?
NEW: The NIH just started requiring NIH-funded research to be made freely, immediately available. In response, some journals are forcing scientists to pay thousands in open-access fees to publish.

The result: chaos. The fees, one scholar says, are “out of control.” www.chronicle.com/article/maki...

Strange trend for researchers to be aware of: participants are using Chat GPT to respond to open-ended questions at the end of surveys. Be sure to look for common indicators of GenAI before coding qualitative data (e.g., numbered lists, double asterisks, etc.)

House LHHC bill is out. Lots of hits to HHS, but the top line number for NIH is 1% decrease, mostly due to cuts ARPA-H. This seems like a huge rejection of the president's budget request.

If this is turning into a battle, then the researchers’ possible counter is to normalize updating preprints and CVs with “accepted at journal x” as sufficient for getting publication credit and not pay the fees.
