If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Every office has an executive tier whose emails are like:

saw on news , , can we replce complianc dept with web 3

and a worker tier whose emails are like:

Dear Jim,
First of all, I *love* this idea! Unfortunately, I spoke with Legal and identified a few issues with this approach. For starters…
Well, it's a little clearer now why billionaires are so invested in technology that produces better written emails.

The problem with trying to do budget negotiations with this tinpot regime is that it’s like the King Solomon and the baby story. One side wants to preserve the baby (democracy, a functional government) and one doesn’t give a shit if it gets carved up as long as they win

Right before the opera began tonight, the orchestra played O Canada and everyone stood and sang. I don’t recall that happening before. It felt a bit jingoistic, but I guess that’s what we all need right now. I’m glad they did it.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

this business model should be flatly illegal

taking on a bunch of debt to buy a company and then burning the company to the ground to service that debt while paying yourselves huge fees is a purely destructive practice that has never once had a positive outcome

ban it completely
It’s official: EA is going private.

The leveraged buyout will be financed by a staggering $20 billion of debt, which likely means some *aggressive* cost cutting is ahead for EA in the coming months and years.

For 150 years, Africville, sitting right next to Halifax, was a thriving Black Canadian community.
Halifax refused to provide city services, and eventually forced residents to move as they bulldozed their homes.
This is the story of that community.

I've seen so many wonderful people with no apparent addictive tendencies whatsoever get absolutely steamrolled by the "infinite feed of random short-form videos" UX.

Reels, TikTok , etc. are digital heroin and I hate them and what they do to people so very, very much.
Listening to someone else watch short videos on their phone is the most annoying thing in the universe, and I believe our society has not adequately grappled with this
