Immigration, indecency, and incompetence. New post on my Brexit & Brexitism Blog. The ever-more indecent terms of the immigration 'debate' are another failure of Brexit, which links to the ever-more obvious incompetence of Reform in local government: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/10/immi...

Great thread.
When I was a teenager there was a bus direct from my hometown in Germany to London - we had a British army base, and this direct bus connection was one of the benefits of that. One summer I went on that bus to go volunteer in an old people's home in Southend-on-Sea. I had just turned 18 and was... 🧵

Anyone, believer or unbeliever, who respects Freedom of & Freedom from Religion must agree:

Parents can share their beliefs at home, but schools should stay neutral—teaching that some believe in one god, some in many, and some in none. That way, children are free to think and choose for themselves!

David Davis spreads fresh falsehoods on the Legacy Act in Parliament. The very issue with decisions like Clonoe is that it has taken 30 years to provide the scrutiny Davis simultaneously hails and rejects. And Saville? Another 30+ years to investigate the killing of innocents, *not paramilitaries*:

This whole episode is quite depressing. Total solidarity with Sunder Katwala. I hope X sort themselves out and kick Smith off the platform. Also that the Police are able to do something. Like catch this racist fool and he gets both prosecuted and publicly shamed.
This racist stalker on X explains why he is confident in his sense of impunity for racist abuse on the platform. (He may be proved right about that, but let's see)

Great thread on reform of the parliamentary system in the UK.
Some thoughts on institutional reform in the UK, spurred by the upcoming Australian elections. Australia has traditionally been classified, with Britain other former colonies, as a "Westminster democracy" - characterised by a majoritarian system and fusion of legislative and executive powers. 🧵

As a non-🇨🇦 Republican I find it ironic that Carney has deployed an institution that undermines Canada’s self-determination…in defence of Canada’s self-determination.

It’s unnecessary to assert Canadian identity through the prism of the UK Royal family although I can see why he’s done it.
My thanks to His Majesty King Charles III for his warm welcome and gracious hospitality today. Canada is fortunate to have a steadfast defender in our sovereign.

There's a lot of evidence of the harms of smacking children.

There's also evidence that children and young people learn more from rewards than from punishment, including this computational study by @stepalminteri.bsky.social

On the left we underestimated the resentment and pushback from the people we arrogantly assumed would come with us. It boomeranged so here we are.

But the populist right have learned nothing from their temporary victory. High on their own supply they are headed for a spectacular crash.
I think Trump’s making it very dangerous for himself is all I’ll say here

I just watched Humanists UKs brand new animation narrated by Alice Roberts: Human nature, human potential. It’s a fantastic introduction to the humanist approach to life. Watch it today! understandinghumanism.org.uk/human-nature...
Human nature, human potential
Alice Roberts explores the questions at the heart of humanism: ‘What are we?’ ‘What are we capable of?’ and ‘How should we make best use of our capacities?’

And yet still British exceptionalism persists sufficiently that the right refuse to acknowledge reality at all and the left are trying to hide from it.
