It’s true. We shouldn’t pretend that. Trumpist culture is not the same as American culture and not equal. Trumpist culture is proudly ignorant, defiantly against America’s founding values and subsequently developed values, venomously bigoted, and generally despicable.
Fox News' Will Cain: "I’m sure there are very honorable law-abiding upstanding citizens and contributors from the Somali community here in the United States, BUT..."

He goes on to say "we aren’t going to pretend here that all cultures are of equal value or the same."

Generational theory is bullshit AND ALSO Gen X is the best generation because we were the last kids who were allowed to grow up by ourselves, not shepherded through a variety of adulthood-training programs

Teaching thing I find useful: if a student stops showing up for class, make the subject line of your email "Is everything OK?" When people are overwhelmed they'll often avoid even opening bad-news emails (cf. me & my bank statements). This way, they know I'm reaching out to help, not chastise.

Reuters reached out to everyone that Trump or his subordinates singled out publicly for retribution, and reviewed hundreds of official orders, directives and public records. The result: the most comprehensive accounting yet of his campaign of payback.

We see something similar at YLCC, although not yet as pronounced as described here. I chalk it up to the way American high school is now taught (at least where I am).
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Someone told me I would have been a good carnival barker. It wasn't meant as a compliment. I totally take it as one
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

We're gonna need a truth and reconciliation commission and Nuremberg style trials to reckon with all of this evil, and any Dem candidate for office who shies away from a full reckoning in the name of "moving forward as a nation" can get well and truly fucked

It's a tangent to Dr Cottom's point, but I love love love working with GED/HiSET students. Give me a classroom full of them and I know we'll have a stellar semester. They show up; they work and think; they know what they're about
I mention because yes sociologist of education. But I also mention because my entire personal code of ethics about educational attainment is core to my moral belief system.

I attended my grandmothers GED diploma ceremony. I would not mock that, not even for a destructive political troll.

Arguably the original XCom; the sequels were fine but I like more of a sandbox than they provide

this isnt cranky, this is literally journalism 101. These people are not journalists they are corporate lackeys who use Word instead of Excel
while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

The responses to this are fascinating so far. Riffing on EB White, nobody is learning anything new, and several of them are killing the frog.
One of my more unpopular beliefs is that I don’t believe in explaining jokes.

Jokes are, by definition, boundary work. They include by exclusion. If you explain it, you cheat the ingroup and the joke.

I know this leads to some unsavory places but it also gives me a lot of pleasure.
