A second senior Iranian diplomat has defected, according to Iran International. This time it’s Gholam-Reza Derikvand from Iran’s embassy in Austria who is seeking political asylum in Switzerland.

The last one was Ali-Reza Hokmabad of Iran’s mission to the UN in Geneva.

The campaign by Alberta’s #UCP to remake the province’s health-care system has created chaos.

But, according to a Tyee analysis, there has also been a steep financial cost. @charlesrusnell.bsky.social reports.

Not only excessive and gratuitous force, it absolutely does not work for the ostensible purpose. They love using it punitively to feel badass and because they can get away with it, but it only makes the situation worse even if you are properly trying to disperse a for-real riot.
Tear gas is banned in international warfare, yet classified as a “riot control agent” that law enforcement can use for crowd control.

“It just doesn’t work well, and it hits the weakest people the most, and causes the most complications in them,” an anesthesiology professor at Duke University said.
Tear Gas Is Way More Dangerous Than Police Let On
In the middle of a respiratory pandemic, law enforcement agencies have used tear gas in especially dangerous ways. The chemical agent also seeps into homes, contaminates food, furniture, skin and surf...

ICE tear gassed a bunch of children on Saturday. This was a massive escalation of force. They were shooting tear gas at the back of the crowd, it took these unmasked people maybe 3-5 minutes in the cloud of tear gas to escape in without trampling. www.theverge.com/policy/87278...

One of the many features of middle age is that if you are fortunate enough to have your mom live to old age, you get a second round of this. You thought you were free but you're not. And have you seen what they want for a pair of pants now? This place used to be good, they've ruined it.

again, the problem is not "masks enable bad behavior." the problem is, police aren't "public servants" and aren't accountable to the public and, therefore, don't have to do anything communities demand. it's up to us to drain police of their political power (and their $ and their personnel).
Rep. Mark Harris: "Some of these things are nonstarters. Having judicial warrants? To me, hat's a nonstarter. Being able to make off their mask, putting them at risk? That's a nonstarter. I would say anything that's going to hamstring the work of ICE, that's just not going to go anywhere."

I’ve just finished a lab exercise with my environmental instrumentation class, in which we built an automated weather station on the top of a 15-story building here on campus.

About half-way through, I noticed that we had company: a merlin!

It seemed completely unfazed by our presence.

So they're just GETTING RID OF IT???
