While VicPD is asking for an $11 million, 14% budget increase in 2026, new FOI data shows that from 2022 to 2024, 48 VicPD officers made over $50,000 in overtime in a single year, with two constables pocketing over $100,000 in extra pay in 2022. www.needsmorespikes.com/blog/vicpd-o... #yyj #cdnfoi

Think about it: if you want to increase either budget, that’s one thing. But if you want to decrease either budget, (likely the library) and the police budget has to go down the same percentage, it would make for some interesting municipal council debates and likely some different outcomes. #yyj
Police always get more and libraries always get less. Here’s an idea: Tie the budget for police and libraries so if you raise the budget for police, you have to raise it for #PublicLibraries the same amount. #MunicipalBudget #YYJ

An important thing about cities is that people are often engaging while walking, biking, or taking public transit, as opposed to the car-centric suburbs. Cars isolate us and make us angry and unhappy.
To piggyback off of John's point (reposted), it's struck me lately how the baseline level of friendliness in cities has always seemed remarkably higher than the suburbs or rural areas to me, and I think it's because everyone is used to interacting with strangers as a routine part of their day

If you go to a suburban mall, you will probably have to park outside and walk in. You don’t expect to drive in to your store.

But for some reason in urban areas it’s considered an injustice if you can’t park directly in front of the store you want to go to.

Also, was the police chief wearing pants at the time of this statement about years of inadequate funding? Because there was no mention of her pants spontaneously bursting into flames after saying that and I'm curious as to how one could be that much of a liar and not have their pants be on fire.
Chief: "In fact the vehicle I was given on the very first day, I was embarrassed to drive and... I wasn't convinced it was going to get me home." "As much as I have a great deal of empathy for your situation, what we're asking for is a product of years of inadequate funding."

"I was embarrassed to drive" looool this while I'm working in healthcare and we're currently cutting back on everything.
But oh sure our delicate police need buckets of cash so they can feel special and fancy while driving.

VicPD's 2026 budget proposal is outrageous and harmful. I've reposted my email to #yyj council here. I encourage anyone opposed to uncontrolled police spending to write to Victoria (councillors@victoria.ca) or Esquimalt (council@esquimalt.ca) to tell them. www.needsmorespikes.com/blog/2025/11...

VicPD wants an $11 million, 14% budget increase in 2026. Here is my message to council outlining some of the ways VicPD’s budget is harmful and unnecessary, and where to start cutting.

Without fanfare, the BC Ministry of Transportation released a report that makes a strong case for a Westshore to Victoria rail line, writes Sam Holland
New Study Makes Strong Case for Getting Westshore Rail on Track - Better Columbia
The province quietly updated the 2011 Westshore Rapid Transit Study. They determined that we need transit investment, now more than ever.

Mamdani is going to impose shangri-la law. Everyone will be blindfolded and forced to play Marco Polo
Mamdani gonna implement Shaaloani law. All disputes settled via shootout duels using non-lethal rounds with all the authenticity of a spaghetti western directed by Japanese anime enthusiasts.

(This is a timely Final Fantasy XIV reference)
Mamdani is going to implement Shannara law. Everything will be extremely derivative of Tolkien and predictable.

hey can acoustic bike riders stop being shitty to e-bike riders and trying to regulate e-bikes to the point where they aren't useful for and/or prohibit them from any kind of cycling infrastructure?

seriously why are some of you so ableist and shitty? are you jealous of people who ride fixies?

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

I heard there's a Batman: The Brave and The Bold live action movie coming out and I really, really, REALLY hope that they'll have Aquaman be like the Aquaman in the Brave and The Bold animated series because that Aquaman was the best.
