A drum worth beating. However much the bottom may have fell out of funding games criticism and non-enthusiast coverage in general, it’s still important to recognize what separated the real deal outlets (firewalls between preview/news coverage and reviews, etc) and influencer coverage.
Game reviewers are woefully unprepared for the conversation about the role they play in the marketing apparatus, doubly so in board games where it's been enthusiast press all the way down, tying their horse to companies' success or failure in a war to balance the scale of positive/negative coverage.
what's highguard?

Absolutely. Not only a fake problem but a verified strength — morally, culturally, financially, and on and on.

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.

Thinking about my friend @moodybugg.bsky.social today, who is helping buy and deliver groceries to her neighbors who are afraid to leave their homes.
A letter from Saint Paul to those last few friends and family who have somehow become indifferent to ongoing campaign of terror in the Twin Cities:

If I was a creative with any amount of success, I’m pretty sure I’d make a point to listen to Rick Nelson’s “Garden Party” at least once a day.

the system is deeply flawed, deeply unfair, and internally contradictory, but at its best the marriage of a pact to outlaw aggression, a New Deal-style arrangement for global poverty alleviation and individual freedom, and avenues to underwrite post-colonial sovereignty had a lot to recommend it
To sum up: if you think Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower set up the liberal international order for no reason, because they were overwhelmed by charity (or war-mongering), you're a fool.

They set it up because they'd just got done punching Nazis and were facing Stalin.

It was all load-bearing.

We’re back on this load of horseshit again. I live in rural Missouri. So do my parents. When folks in my parents’ town got targeted and taken by immigration officials, the folks hated it. The assumption that people in rural areas think this shit rules is a massive flattening and I’m so tired of it.
People in Minneapolis don't like it when secret police come into their city to kill and brutalize them, people in rural areas think it's great. Somehow, this is a problem that Minneapolis is supposed to make amends for.
As usual, the story here isn't about "divides" or cosmopolitan elites looking down on rural populations. It is about radicalization. This woman wants violent vengeance for things that did not happen.

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

This isn’t an original though on my part by any means, but the things some of us (me included!) find cringe are often expressions of earnestness. And earnest people often actually do the work.
I try to maintain some emotional distance while writing, which is an analytical exercise for me.

But I wept through much of this, because the videos of Trump’s fascist assault are hard viewing.

But they also convinced me we will win. Here’s why.

I’ve been forming a hypothesis for a few months that some people are unwilling to find any fun in being wrong and only can bring themselves to play “optimally” because of this.
this is why I stopped making train games

Somebody Somewhere nailed it. A show without bombast that understood how life works; we change slowly, we grow slowly, and we do it together. Sam and Joel’s growth in understanding what being in any kind of relationship and in a community means all culminates in small moments, not big ones.

In of the most beautiful works of art about parenthood ever, Laura Marling managed to make the old chestnut about the personal being universal seem fresh and alive. Immediate, moving, and joyous without being saccharine, this one hit me like a truck immediately. An absolutely perfect album.
