I feel like Los Angeles is a place where people expect ICE to happen because the kidnappings have been happening to my home city for decades, so there’s less media attention to it now. and I want folks to see that in LA, Latine students are organizing major protests & the police are attacking them

I understand why non-public servants in Ottawa are rolling their eyes at public servant complaints about the return to office mandate.

But as Luke points out, what is the point of going to a building where you have no office and are spending the entire time on MS teams video calls?

It's ludicrous.
Two things I’m not sure is widely understood:

1. Many public servants no longer have their own desks and work in transient government co-working spaces

2. Many describe a Kafkaesque existence of going to physical offices only to spend their time on video calls with the people sitting next to them

But it's hard and expensive to create knowledge better to just repeat what other people say
I have zero bandwidth to develop the idea, but the last decade has given rise to a gulliblity style, where a source’s statement is treated as the story regardless of whether it’s true or plausible. It creates stories that are technically true but functionally misinformation. You see it everywhere.

All too many people are still in relationships (whether or not married) because they cannot financially afford to separate.

And a huge segment of our society thinks that's great and also people should be punished and forced to stay with a bad choice.

It's always about trapping women and children. We can't have nice things because of abusive men.
This is literally true. There was a proposal in the US in the early seventies to bring in a basic income, there were trials, and they succeeded on every measure -- but the divorce rate went up as women didn't have to live with men they didn't love. So the proposal was scrapped.
There's two main reasons there's a segment of society against UBI

1. THOSE people, CERTAIN people will get FREE THINGS!!!! THAT I AM PAYING FOR!!!!

This thinking is wrong and bad. If one truly believes that...more money is being spent on all the other bullshit that doesn't help.

2. Divorce.

WHAT THE $%#&.

OpenAI, Google [reminder = U.S.] is helping to inform our government policy on AI.

This is sheer, unforgivable, incompetence.
Canada did a consultation on a new national AI strategy, formed an expert task force to write 32 reports, then used AI to analyze the responses & reports. The result is a summary that strings together 100s of vague action items & flattens nuance and policy trade-offs into false consensus

My colleague is so touched that I shared this with folks here. We really are going flat out to deal with stepped up ICE/CBP activity here in #santafe. Our area is over 50% Hispanic, with a considerable immigrant population.
My local Indivisible group, #indivisiblesantafe, has a member who has fronted $1000 for whistle kits for ICE Watch. I would like to help reimburse him. I know there are plenty of other big causes, but if you can toss us a few bucks, we’ss be grateful. ICE is snatching our neighbors. We are […]

The pass Carney’s getting for the gap between what people think he’s doing and his actual policies reminds me of how progressives in the 90s were convinced that Paul Martin was on their side, even as he gutted the social programs they valued.
