Anyway when people say “but that was a different era! Queer people hadn't been invented yet! We didn't know women were people in those days!” Think of 66 year old Michael Stipe. And these gorgeous green and gold earrings.
Let's say polls show people want to exit a close, longstanding political & economic union.

Voters are warned it will harm the economy. They want it anyway. So politicians pretend to agree it's a good idea.

It does harm the economy.

Now... let's see what happens to the polls!
A critique I hear of me sometimes is that I don’t believe in changing public opinion.

What I would say is that I don’t really think *working politicians* should be focused on changing opinion, that’s the job for everyone else — go out and persuade someone!

When Reform talk about "replacing" the Tories, it reminds me of all that talk we used to hear of UKIP/Brexit Party/Reform style parties "replacing" the BNP/EDL/far right.

By "replacing" the Tories, they mean, of course, that loads of Tories are joining Reform.

The world feels bleak. It's cold. It's dark. It's January. It is all feeling pretty grim for a lot of people.

But! Last weekend it was Michael Stipe’s birthday! He is still with us on this earth. So to cheer us all (myself) up, here is a 🙏Michael Stipe appreciation thread 🙏

When campaigning for abortion rights, she had death threats, red paint ("babies' blood") poured over her car, letters put through the letterbox against her "whoremongery" and placards denouncing her as antichrist. Her reaction in her own words was "It just made me brazen". I love that reaction.

Incredibly reasonable and impartial question for journalists to ask - and demand a real answer
It would be helpful for journalists to ask Nigel Farage what steps he has taken to find out whether other Reform politicians have accepted money from foreign powers.

This reminds me of the episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when Jonathan creates an alternate world where everyone thinks he's cool and popular and he can do everything. By the end of the ep he learns that he's sad and pathetic and the fantasy isn't real.

On Threads, the AP promoted this story with the caption: “Anti-abortion pregnancy centers offer much more than free ultrasounds and diapers. Here's why they're expanding as Planned Parenthood clinics close.” Do better @apnews.com
Once again, this kind of “both sides” coverage of crisis pregnancy centers is simply not going to cut it, because on one “side” we have medical and scientific consensus—and basic facts—and on the other “side” we have disinformation. Giving these perspectives equal weight is journalistic malpractice

Interesting piece. But it's not just about channels, it's about a larger crisis in government comms - and in society - which is not a new thing and goes back perhaps 15 years. Put simply, the Whitehall comms machine has lost the ability to win arguments.
The AI minister says the digital ID announcement is an e.g of where gov must up its online comms game:

“To be able to make sure that when a significant thing is happening, like an announcement on digital ID, we're winning the battle of ideas and arguments…” he tells @zoecrowther.bsky.social
