My mom's house is filled with Things, some of them valuable (largely inherited from her mom's family), many of them sentimental. She likes her Things, seeing them every day, but the big factor in why she hasn't gotten rid of them is that her ethical code is Don't Let That Wind Up in a a Landfill

ULINE owner Liz Uihlein thinks it's bad that young adults can remain on their parents insurance plans as long as they can because it stops them being trapped in a terrible job working for her!

I hope all the tourists buzzing my neighborhood in helicopters today get gout.

This sounds like a joke or a setup for him to escape custody but if I had hiccups for nine months I'd be too exhausted to run.
The best cure I know is drinking water out of a cup with a paper towel tight over the rim. Better than the shark tank hiccup straw.

whatever 2026 holds i don't think anything next year will be funnier than Chicago Pope. 2025 was overall a huge stinker but Chicago Pope was an all time great B-plot

I knew this one was going to be bleaker because it's the Winter one but it still needed more humor. The details of the crime are honestly too convoluted and there was a missed opportunity for a reckoning with the shortcomings of the criminal justice system.
wrote about Wake Up Dead Man, which I really disliked.

I know some people have praised it as a critique of christofascism, but it's twisty plot is much more interested in proving the church's innocence than in standing with victims. www.everythingishorrible.net/p/wake-up-de...

This is essentially the plot of The Sound of Music.
"Any artist cancelling their show at the Trump Kennedy Center over political differences isn't courageous or principled—they are selfish, intolerant, and have failed to meet the basic duty of a public artist: to perform for all people"- Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi
Kennedy Center vows to sue musician who canceled performance over Trump name change
The Kennedy Center is planning legal action after jazz musician Chuck Redd canceled an annual holiday concert. Redd pulled out after President Trump's name appeared on the building.

I've been mainlining Agatha Christie novels since October, mostly for fun but incidentally gauging which ones it might make sense to put on the shelves for customers. Just got to Towards Zero and I was ready to order in a copy right up until the last two pages.

It's so funny what my 25+ year divorced parents still have in common (admiration for elaborately carved doors; Only Murders in the Building)

It's been felled by fire (a lot), water (thrown in the river), and now wind. How can we kill it with earth?
(It has also been felled by a car ramming into it) (And by birds)

All I have to say about Avatar is that Cameron essentially admitted in the New Yorker that the whole thing was a vehicle for a battle between a helicopter and a pterodactyl and I support that premise. Everything else is set dressing.

A warning from the lawyer representing the unjustly fired Oklahoma TA! Beware of GFM scams: her client is NOT crowdfunding at this time.
Please be aware of possible scams! My client, Mel Curth, is not seeking any donations at this time. She is grateful for your support and instead requests folks that want to help to donate to the local organizations of your choice!

My mom had left handedness beaten out of her at school in the 1950s!
Remember the 1920s when nobody was left-handed

This is a great example of how genAI steals from us all on multiple levels. It's stolen a promotional spot for real books and authors, it's stolen a job from an actual journalist who could have compiled this, it's stolen an opportunity for parents to be recommended good NZ books for their kids
#4 sounds like a lovely book but I didn't write it. Have had whānau up and down the country send me clippings lol
Whoever put together this list that has been circulated to regional papers, didn't fact check.

Do yourself a favor if you have any phobias of critters (four legged, six legged, winged, etc) just don't read the replies to this post.
Trust me.
My anxiety dreams tonight are locked in but you can still be free
they don’t tell you when you buy a christmas tree at the christmas tree farm that you could take it home, decorate it, and then be relaxing in your living room seven nights later when A BAT suddenly flies out and starts CRASHING AROUND YOUR HOUSE

We have been making Nigel Slater's Christmas goose for several years. They republished the recipe in the Observer this year and it reminds me why Slater is one of my favorite food writers.

Looking through the Wikipedia page showing famous OU alums, I am wondering if @travismcelroy.bsky.social is the person to lead the charge for publicly shaming the administration here?
The University of Oklahoma fired an instructor for failing a student who wrote a reaction paper without having read the text she was supposed to react to.

By definition she failed to satisfy the requirements of the assignment—which she publicly disclosed before the decision to fire the instructor.
Adding on to the clip @parkermolloy.com found where the dumbass OU student admits she just rushed through the assignment.

This isn't an issue of a trans instructor trying to force students to adhere to their worldview...it's a moron student half-assing an assignment and trying to shift blame.

This is a rare not bad idea in the NYT but please let it not happen until my mom dies because I would not be able to stand the bitching every time she comes to visit.

I really want to read this new book about the relationship between rent and capitalism but my brain is demanding a strict diet of middle grade fantasy and Agatha Christie

We have been remiss in watching the Christmas episodes of our favorite shows this year so I'm catching up with Sports Night, and it strikes me that (a) Jeremy is such a dick and (b) Isaac is a boss who manages to compare himself to God without being an asshole.
