I'm Leo✨, I love beards, ancient civilizations, alien worlds, weed, nature, animals and video games. Oh, right, I am a Chile-based artist and game dev on the side. I'm currently trying to change my relationship with making art, but here are some of my personal faves to get to know me:

star trek is about a utopian vision of the future bordering on fantasy where people someday will be able to make good choices about complicated problems by talking to each other and involving people who know about things
The thing about Star Trek is that the majority of it has the crew spending most of the episode trying to figure out, through arguing and investigating, what's the right thing to do in a complicated situation and I don't think any shows do that now? Like in a Very Special Episode but not all the time

Happy new year! Hope it's a good one for everyone! ✌️❤️
I will start this year sharing the first art-dev scene from my game about gnomes, we're just getting started!

With all the Sandfall and Larian AI-related news, there are bound to be fans that feel that the flak was disproportionate in terms of the degree of AI use

And it would be, if those examples existed in a vacuum

But it's far more important to nip any and all genAI use in the bud

Any and all use, no matter how inconsequential it seems, has a snowball effect. Once upper management gets like "oh, it saved me 2 minutes writing this email" it's a matter of not much time before it trickles down to "you should use it so you can do 2x the work in the same time"

All of this is still without considering the legal, ethical, sociopolitical, health and environment implications of the tech

Despite all that, it's still a tool to serve capitalistic gains, because the only thing it does, with no regard to output quality, is to "save time" so you can do more work.

So no, in this timeline I won't excuse a placeholder poster or dialogue line or even an internal power point presentation. The work was always done and it can still be done. Nobody gets left behind by not using genAI, they just care about their craft like they did before, or even more so.

I absolutely get it, and I don't blame the devs in any way. I get that it was also 2022, before the genAI mess was *this* messy

I loved E33 and I can absolutely tell that all art was human-made

But I still stand by the Indie Game Awards decision to recall the award to send this important message

The games industry has a proud tradition of neon green/pink/checkerboard placeholder assets for a reason.

Videogames look horrible during development. It's normal!

(Also some of the best laughs I ever had during my time in videogames dev came from encountering intentionally horrendous coder art.)
Say it with me now- placeholder assets are supposed to be bright and obvious so you DON’T ship with them.

Also it doesn’t matter if no ai-generated assets are in the final executable?? The rising sea levels aren’t gonna be like “oh well no one saw that so the climate change doesn’t count”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive is finding itself in hot water over its use of AI generated assets in developing the game.

I will not be watching The Game Awards tonight. I encourage you not to as well.

If you'd like to support developers, watch their trailers online and wishlist their games (or pre order!)

We do not have to participate in Geoff's love letter to capitalism. You do not "have to hand it to him."

Still thinking about why none of the new Star Trek has included more Ferengi... after all Grand Nagus Rom achieved! Big miss from all the writers!

I cannot recommend you enough to install the Wikipedia app on your devices and use it like you would any search engine. Nowadays they even have tabs so you can open many articles at once.

And, if you can, please donate to the foundation. It has survived the internet enshittification that way.
wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...
Wikipedia Says AI Is Causing a Dangerous Decline in Human Visitors
