TLDR of my regular Veteran's Day post: My father was a Marine. He survived battles you read about in history class. He had PTSD when it was just called moodiness, temper, or "get Daddy a drink."
Veteran's Day matters. Don't let it get overshadowed by political bullshit.

Last month I published a short fiction story, Terminally Online, about a culture warrior struggling (and failing) to come to terms with the future he helped create. Steve Miller is just as much of a nasty piece of work as his namesake, and it was a lot of fun watching his plans unravel.

Finally some good news: Supreme Court rejects attempt to overturn the legalization of gay marriage.
If only they'd exercised this much common sense in 2022, and upheld the constitutional right to abortion instead of overturning it...

I was having a pretty good day, and then I found out that my favorite Korean grocery is closing and all their homemade kimchee was already sold out. :(

We are living in the world that could rapidly become the Star Trek ideal. UBI, free healthcare, many jobs done by machine, freeing up humans to pursue the arts, education, exploration.
But it's being run by the fucking Ferengi.

It snowed overnight. When I got home, Luna urgently wanted to investigate the porch. This is about as far as she made it (about a foot and a half), before deciding that warm toes are better than cold toes. #Caturday

I guess we didn't have enough home-grown garbage, and now we're importing it. Wonderful.
Also, throw this in the face of anyone who uses anti-immigration arguments and supports the fascist-in-chief.

After bringing white South Africans to the United States as refugees earlier this year, the Trump administration has now granted protection to members of far-right European parties.
This plan, which recently became official, makes the country's refugee program into a tool for white nationalism.

Over 71 million Americans are paid less than a living wage, and are forced into social safety nets like SNAP.
If you think too many people are receiving SNAP benefits, don’t shame them.
Shame their employers paying them poverty wages and forcing taxpayers to subsidize the rest.

This. Poverty isn't just a side effect-- it's another tool for maintaining control.
There is a reason they made sure everyone lives paycheck to paycheck and all benefits are tied to our jobs. Ask a man to watch his kids hungry so he can go stand in the street and fight back as we have watched every person entrusted with the duty and power to stop this refuse to — that’s a big ask.
We are now learning how much oppression and abuse Americans will tolerate. The day will come when enough Americans will decide enough is enough and this lawless regime must be stopped. But right now too many are willing to let the lawless abuse continue.

I would LOVE to see cars made with fewer computerized components. Much of it is far better for the manufacturer and predatory insurance companies than for the buyer. If we lived in a nation that actually had real consumer protection laws, harvesting your driving data and selling it would be illegal.
Chips are cheap, adaptable, and make compliance easy, but they’ve created systemic dependency. We could engineer out the need for them and you’d claw back independence and resilience. One thing I hate more than anything are people who say "impossible". Those people should stay home and wear helmets.
