It's Banned Books Week and I'm celebrating seeing my first story published in 4 years 🥳📚 I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, because it felt really, really good to write.

Thanks @castofwonders.org for being a source of joy this week.

I also did not get my ass kicked this year when historically I have very much gotten my ass kicked (Moderna moreso than Pfizer). Although I'm never getting both C+flu shots on the same day again like I did last year, whew that was rough
as usual ymmv with side effects but the irl people i know who usually got knocked down didn’t this time and i rode 20 miles that night and the next, so you can maybe plan for less coping!

(also benadryl 15 minutes beforehand helps minimize reactions for real)
Reminder to get your flu and Covid vax (just got mine)

K-Pop Demon Hunters is legitimately the global cultural phenomenon of 2025 and honestly there are far worse things to be a cultural touchstone this year than a trio of young women fighting literal soul-sucking hegemony through the power of their art
Oh crap, it's back at #1 in movies again today on Netflix too. That's awesome!

Didn't make it into the Women of the Weird West anthology but at least made it into the second round. Takes the sting out of rejection a bit to know someone still enjoyed the story.

I wrote about our batshit media landscape and all the ads that keep trying to convince us stuff like taking a vitamin or using toilet paper is ✨self care✨ lauraduerr.wordpress.com/2025/09/25/s...
Six Companies Control 90% Of Our Media And They All Want You To Watch LiMu Emu Ads
Once upon a time, streaming services didn’t have ads. (Once upon an even further time, they mailed you DVD discs! Remember that? I want that model back!) Now they have ads. And still we pay m…

Botox ads are out there earnestly saying "women, your forehead wrinkles when you wrinkle it!! stop that!"

and that getting needles poked into your face every month is self-care actually

it's enraging and yet completely in line with Our Current Moment

I wonder how far back you have to go until telling someone that boycotting a company's actions involves cancelling subscriptions at three different, seemingly unrelated companies sounds insane again

Portland, OR, metro area folks, please keep an eye out for people who need help during this extended heat wave. If you're out and about, stick a couple of extra bottles of water in your tote bag and hand them to people who need them.

Here's a list of cooling centers with day and night hours.
Here’s where cooling centers will open in all 3 Portland-area counties Friday
Soaring temps Friday prompt Portland area counties to offer cooling centers for some relief from the heat.

I like to stitch up my patterns before I put them on Etsy. Unfortunately since I have both crappy hands and ADHD, this pattern won't arrive until shortly before the heat death of the universe.

Right, since we're apparently doing "disabled people can't do art without AI" discourse again:

Got adaptive/assistive tech that helps you or someone you know do art/crafts? Drop it in the thread (bonus points if you can say what it's useful for and how much it costs)

At first I thought this said "quilts" but those too!
AI this, LLM that, I'm amped for the counterculture to ignite against this banal mediocrity.

Gimme handmade zines, let's write poems on the back of receipts, a watercolor using found pigments, book clubs on subway cars; let the revolution be not just analog but antiquated, baby. Bring back quills!
