Make it a Blockbuster night? No, make it a library night!

That’s right, public libraries also love movies and video games. Shh! Don't tell the books!
Pinned
It feels like the end of an era, but it's not. THE LAST VIDEO STORE is your local public library!

Browse thousands of titles just like you used to. And many libraries carry video games too.

Make it a Blockbuster night? No, make it a library night!
👇 This person gets it 👇
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

everyone talks about going to the video store but nobody talks about going to the library and borrowing 10 weird animal documentaries that dump so much dust into your vhs player that your mom has to run the head cleaner twice to get through each one of them

Having the Complete Series DVD Set of AAAHHH! Real Monsters in your house is just a smart use of shelf space.

But if you’re looking for something else, don’t forget that your local library has thousands of other choices on their shelves.
Counting just DVDs and up – not VHS or digital purchases – I have 493 movies and TV shows on physical home video.

I'm not saying you should be where I'm at. But I am arguing you should consider getting closer.

Remember, many public libraries carry video games now!

You can ask your local librarian for a game recommendation just like you would for a book.
Seems to me that the fact that interested people can’t find games they find interesting and maybe don’t even know they exist is (a) obvs true so dunking on it is dumb and (b) a massive fucking problem for the artform that the corporate sector of the industry has no interest *at all* in solving

I've been borrowing movies/TV shows from the library a lot more recently, and it's really nice! Especially when it comes to stuff that is before the year 2000, which most streaming services treat like poison.
A lot of libraries also have physical media you can check out. Our local system has movies, audiobooks TV etc. I do realize it’s not practical to always do that, but it’s a good option! Also getting involved in your local library & its board can help!
I think a good first step for people would be to see what streaming services they have access to through their local library. I get Kanopy and there is so much good TV content on there that you get for free!
