Going to port my ongoing thread about appearances museums make in romance novels over here JUST IN CASE...
I would put A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell up there, and maybe also Madame Fourcade's Secret War by Lynne Olson. I still think about Mme Fourcade more regularly, but my Goodreads claims I liked AWONI more 😅
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

I've seen all 1,080 episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU, and many of them a truly upsetting amount of times, and I'm pretty sure I am more qualified to prosecute a criminal trial than Lindsey Halligan.
I’m not a lawyer but I’m pretty sure you’re not allowed to tell the jury to “vote assuming we actually have a whole bunch more secret evidence”

And these limited ACA benefits don't do anything when the premiums are going up, like mine, by thousands of dollars. Keeping the subsidies is literally the bare minimum they can do since they won't actually attempt to regulate the health insurance industry.
The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.

The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

If Clase threw the 2024 ALCS, I want him burned at the stake? I?

Like, baseball is supposed to the thing you fixate on because all the other things are terrible. It's not supposed to BE THE TERRIBLE THING.
This also brings up huge questions about the 2024 postseason! Guards made it all the way to ALCS before losing to the Yankees.

All of this is on Rob Manfred. All of it
More from Passan: “The 23-page indictment against Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz lays out the alleged scheme for the pitchers to intentionally throw balls so bettors could wager on pitches to be balls or strikes. It started, prosecutors say, as early as May 2023 with Clase and later included Ortiz.”

The White Stripes entering the Rock Hall makes me field unspeakably old, but they are probably also the first inductee where I remember the first time I encountered them, around when they were hitting it big, and knew they would BE big.

If I remember correctly... there was an initial period where you were paying list release price (the $22.99 or so), and then there were sort of dependable cost decreases after a time? Like I had a lot of VHS tapes but almost never the hot new thing because we waited for the price to go down.
Hold up.

I just saw an ad for the Muppet Christmas Carol VHS tape (I presume 1993). It said $22.99.

Did people really pay $23 in 90s money for tapes?! (We were poor, we only had a few and some probably bootlegged ones.)

Imagine being so dedicated to stealing people's healthcare that you let letters telling them that their premiums were about to spike by 100-500% go out 3 days before an election, while you were also trying to starve 40 million people to bully the other party into letting you steal the healthcare.

They keep going on about how great Game 7s are, and I am sitting here like: hi, hello, all of my worst baseball memories are Game 7s.

I guess my follow up question here is: is this why the food and the service is actually good again? Because we've seen noticeable improvements in our Chipotle experience in the last two months or so over the couple years prior.

Torn between "I would watch this tho" and "is this a Saturday Night Live sketch"
“Following the jewel heist at The Louvre, [Bari] Weiss suggested they interview author Dan Brown…Brown is well known as the bestselling author of the 2003 mystery novel, The Da Vinci Code…”

-tucks this away into my "Kenny Lofton should be in the Hall of Fame" argument-
Shohei joins Kenny Lofton (1995) and Stan Hack (1945) as the only players ever to reach base 6 times in a World Series game.

My millennial male friends from high school are the gentlest weirdos and have never been anything like this.

You know how I know? The Tr*mp assassination attempt happened during my 20-year high school reunion.
i actually don’t think the “average” american millennial man had a nazi phase. it’s not some boys will be boys shit. this makes me side eye you and your friend group, sounds like a personal problem

It has come to my attention that, if the Blue Jays win the World Series, I will have to see Mark Shapiro hoist a trophy, and honestly, I might now be rooting for the Dodgers...

Introduce yourself with the last five concerts you saw:

Dave Matthews Band
Missy Elliot
Sleater-Kinney
Janet Jackson
Blind Guardian (...this was Matt's doing)

I think these are the last five? This question was easier to answer when you just had a pile of concert stubs.
Introduce yourself with the last five concerts you saw:

Sutton Foster & Kelli O'Hara
Aida Cuevas
Weird Al Yankovic
Leslie Odom Jr.
Pentatonix
Introduce yourself with the last five concerts you saw:
(I'm including in person and streamed)

The Rose
Monsta X
J-Hope
Rocket Club
BTS

This skews Kpop but only 2 are in person and that's cuz I haven't wanted to go to many in person concerts since 2020 and Kpop is so good at streaming.

We had to do a free trial of Fox One to watch the ALCS game, and it's showing us very 'Merica-coded doomsday prepper food commercials and like... I just want baseball.

I sincerely hope there's a box for feedback when I cancel the hell out of this trial.

The thing I liked most about that weird play in the NLCS game is that that happened once in our rec softball game, and I was Will Smith. Makes me feel better to see him make the same stupid mistake 😂

I got paywalled out of this halfway through, but I was raised right so I don't need to know the reasons he thinks Johnny Cash is uncool to know that he is wrong.
Compared to Dylan and Springsteen, country-music legend Johnny Cash can seem deeply uncool. It took time for me to appreciate his profound, plainspoken strength, writes Jon Fasman.
