It’s the end of an era for me—I decided not to return this fall to my adjunct librarian position at a local cc. I’ve been in this role for 14 years and it was a wonderful experience and gave me the confidence to completely shift over to academic librarianship. 1/2

Hilarious that the “privacy of thought” article in C&RL asserted that imperialism and colonialism are only tangentially related to libraries. Author was clearly unaware of anti-literacy laws aimed at people of color in the U.S. in the 19th century? Segregated public libraries?
"...imperialism and colonialism, mass incarceration, disparities in access to healthcare, the achievement gap in education, and disparate outcomes for “BIPOC populations.” (95) None of these topics has more than an indirect link to library work."

I have lost my ability to can.

Agree! The writing is regressive and dismissive of critical research (and well, people’s life experiences) related to race, equity, and inclusion in librarianship. “Privacy of thought” < respect and inclusion of historically marginalized people and perspectives in our profession and spaces.
If you read this article at a superficial level, it's confusing.

If you try to really understand what's being said, it's probably the most intellectually dishonest article I've seen since.... the last time I read a piece of conservative media that pretended to be moderate, I guess?

RFK Jr. keeps calling the products of hard work by scientists “miracles”. They are not miracles. They are the result of decades of rigorous, thoughtful work by experts, which he refuses to acknowledge.

Keeping in mind that the ancestors—Black AND queer—survived much more oppressive periods in history. Yes, many didn’t survive. But many did. I wouldn’t be here otherwise. That keeps me going. That and spite—knowing that me taking up space and just existing pisses some people off? Well, GOOD! ✊🏾
How are y'all dealing with all this shit?

Happening now, a transgender sports ban is being heard in Congress.

This ban might ban trans people from dancing, darts, and even chess in many universities.

It'll also target 9 year olds playing soccer.

Octavia Butler couldn’t see the future. She saw what was happening in front of her and, in addition to studying the past, was able to imagine where it would lead. It’s important to tell the truth about her because mythologizing her is a disservice to her legacy.

run for your goddamn school board, I am begging you, I cannot stress this enough, if any path toward a school board position is available to you (it’s, sincerely, more likely than you think!) there’s a moral imperative to pursue it
In case you were wondering how emboldened the far right is right now, last night our school board voted to remove *pregnancy* from the employee handbook's list of categories protected from discrimination along with gender & sexual orientation.
