@lajoyce.bsky.social
UMC Pastor, socialist, mom. Talk to me about Chicago politics, public goods and the world we want to win. Working to build a community that struggles for what we can change and endure what we can’t (yet)
We've started doing "truths to be told" during our joys/ concerns time at church because it is so disorienting to live in a moment where you/your neighbors are being gassed, shot and disappeared only to have the people who are supposed to be on our side* giving flowers to the fascist responsible.
Jeffries: "The border is secure. That's a good thing. It happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it, of course he'll get credit for that. In terms of making sure that we actually deal with the issues that matter, including on immigration, there's a lot that's left to be desired."

"Our rage means that, for as hard as President Donald Trump and his administration are trying, they have failed in intimidating us or convincing us that what’s happening is normal. And there is Holy Spirit power in that." —@lajoyce.bsky.social on clergy protests at Broadview.
Chicago Is in a State of Holy Rage
On Nov. 14, clergy from a variety of faiths gathered outside the ICE processing facility in Broadview, Ill., to articulate God’s rage.

My hot take is that bad Christmas movies were so much better before “bad Christmas movies” became a thing. Now they’re too self aware and it’s REALLY hard to do that well.

The unity and clarity of (many) Christian denominations right now is kind of astounding. To be in alignment with all Catholic Bishops, as a female clergywoman, is Holy Spirit work. And that's not even mentioning the interfaith solidarity. People of faith are united against a clear and present evil.
US Bishops have responded to attacks by Border Czar Tom Homan: “The bishops of the United States have spoken together and in unity with Pope Leo XIV.”

A few days ago as we were leaving McDonald's my 5 year old yells, "MOM STOP THE CAR! I FORGOT SOMETHING!" And I said, "what did you forget?" And she yelled, "MY BARBECUBES!" And now that is our name for all McDonald's sauces

This is actually what happened at Broadview. Thanks to @jackjenkins.me for covering this.

At least seven faith leaders arrested at Broadview ICE facility protest

One time a woman came to our Bible study and told me that you couldn't use a Bible app on your phone because the devil could get into the technology and changed the words. I brushed it aside and continued my lesson and, well, sorry to that woman I guess...
AI slop now making up saccharine Bible verses that do not exist

Sometimes it’s surreal to think…the DHS called me an imbecilic moron today.
Yikes 😬 an official U.S. government account just referred to Americans as “imbecilic morons.” That’s… a choice.

I was there. Not one attempted to hurt an officer. But police brutalized protesters with batons, threatened tasers, ripped people from the crowd, etc.

I asked on the mic, “Who saw the police brutalize someone they love today?” And 100 people raised their hands. Shame on Broadview’s Mayor.
Where is this injured cops in Broadview shit coming from? You would think one of the many journalists on the ground would’ve noticed if it was actually a riot by dangerous agitators and not just cops beating on clergy

NEW: So, the courtroom at the "Broadview 6" arraignment in Chicago yesterday featured lotsa Methodist pastors.

Why? They were supporters of defendant/fellow Methodist Brian Straw.

"If you come for one United Methodist, you have come for all of us,” one pastor said. religionnews.com/2025/11/13/m...
Methodist pastors march into courtroom with 'boring suburban dad' indicted for protesting
CHICAGO (RNS) — ‘If you come for one United Methodist, you have come for all of us,’ said a Chicago area UMC pastor.

Welp, this aged like milk. Really disappointed that @govpritzker.illinois.gov refuses to deal with the fact that the State Police are brutalizing peaceful protesters, including my unarmed clergy colleagues, to protect ICE at Broadview. We need more than speeches, our neighbors are disappearing.
Why would you fangirl Gavin Newsom when you have a perfectly good JB Pritzker right there…

@durbin.senate.gov gets to retire in wealth/security while millions of people lose their healthcare, suffer, and die for nothing. And he won't face the political consequences. There aren't words for the rage I feel at the betrayal of the IL people at the moment we are under attack. Shame.

Regular occurrence in my city now to come face to face with masked armed men and to have guns pointed at you. Amazing, if unsurprising, that regular Chicagoans response is not to cower but to tell them to get fucked.

As always in this house it’s, “sit down, shut up, Rahm Emmanuel” Emmanuel deserves the Cuomo treatment here in Chicago.
reminder David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel both went on the record to Politico to say they were fine with this, either knowing the result would be mass death of children or being too dumb to know. Decide for yourself what’s worse!

Solidarity from Chicago. It’s so hard to explain to people not experiencing this that none of this is “law enforcement” it’s terror and cruelty.
Don’t think ppl understand the terror the Feds are unleashing on the streets of LA right now. Roving patrols targeting vulnerable individuals. It’s horrible.

There’s no one coming to save us except ourselves.
The past week+ has been really intense in Los Angeles. We need all of the help, support, & attention we can get. Feds are literally roving the streets snatch & grabbing vulnerable individuals. It's horrific. We need to do more.

Lmaoooo, they're cooked. But also...Aunt and Uncle are the correct expressions for your parent's cousins? My kids call my cousins Aunt and Uncle. What are they supposed to call them "Mom's cousin X?"
imagine telling on yourself that you refer to adult relatives of your parents' age as something other than "aunt" or "uncle". the expression "am I your mate?" exists for a reason

Last thought of the night. Another thing we are seeing from elected officials (Pritzker, Broadview’s mayor, many centrist alderpeople) is that if you truly believe the police have been/will keep us safe you cannot meet this moment.

Make each other brave, make each other brave, make each other brave, make each other brave. We know now, if we didn’t before, no one is going to do it for us. But we aren’t powerless so be brave.

This I exactly it right now
The vibes in Chicago right now are sort of like during the pandemic except if covid showed up in a random neighborhood every day and had to be driven off by everyone yelling at it

Nine months ago I put most of my hope in major institutions continuing to hold fascism in check, but had little expectation that regular people with little to no power would step up and put themselves at risk.

I had it exactly backward.
signs like these are up all over Chicago cafes and storefronts (here, cafes in Brighton Park and Back of the Yards) warning ICE not to enter without a judicial warrant

It is disorienting to live in a time when your regular degular neighbors are so much braver than the people with the most power in our state.
