Mentoring is the most important thing most of us can do. Here is a 🧵about what I've learned as a PI running an academic research lab. I hope some of the advice is helpful to those who are just starting their labs and to folks hitting the academic job market in search of an independent position 🧪 1/n

Beyond the Secretory Pathway: New Insights Into Protein Release
While proteins bearing N-terminal signal or leader sequences are secreted via the ER-Golgi-plasma membrane axis of the conventional secretion pathway, many cytosolic proteins lacking signaling sequen...

I love AlphaFold—but please include PAE (Predicted Aligned Error) plots for every “interaction.” Pretty PDBs ≠ proof. If the PAE doesn’t show an interface, it ain’t one. Show the plots. Structural biology's reputation is on the line.

I ran around for years thinking nothing of my knees. They did not hurt. They did not give out. They did their job.

Now I think about my knees all the time...exercising, walking, stepping off a curb, sitting, standing up, lying down, etc...I am always aware of how they're feeling.

My 🤬 knees.

The diminishing returns of 🧪 paper revision:

1. Including (a lot of) new data to (further) support rigor of the study.
2. Realizing discussion of new data detracts from central narrative.
3. Realizing revised text is oppressively dense.
4. Realizing revised draft is over the word limit.
5. 😢
