On the breakout success of Heated Rivalry, the legacy of Schitt's Creek, and why Canada is so good at making queer TV about fundamentally good people ✨🇨🇦🏒

What ‘Heated Rivalry’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’ say about the Canada we want to be | Xtra Magazine

Can't say I was thrilled to learn about the Shopify-products-showing-up-on-Amazon situation first thing this new year. It's not happening to Canadian shops yet I don't think but I will certainly have to sort out how to turn it off when it does, and that will take me away from making books OH MY GOD.

I've been vocal in saying groups like the ADL are much too quick to label all anti-Zionism as necessarily antisemitism, and I will continue to say so. But if you want to see why many Jews instinctively feel like criticisms of Zionism are antisemitism, look at this. www.i24news.tv/en/news/inte...

No exaggeration, I banged the table and silent screamed when I saw this.
2025 was the pits in many ways, but not all ways. Our pals at @microcosm.bsky.social have been a source of joy, support and deep nerdy conversations, and partnering with them to make our books available worldwide has been the absolute best. I am howling. In that way of my people who laugh when nothing else could do. Look, antisemitism in Canada is as real as it is anywhere else. That this commentary was even deemed worthy of publishing, though, is absolutely wild. Tulsa. OMG

New program urges Canadian Jews worried by rising hate to relocate to Oklahoma
As more Canadian Jews consider fleeing the country due to rising antisemitism, a U.S. non-profit is urging them to make an exodus to Tulsa.

One of the fun parts of teaching about Jews and Jewish identity at this moment in history is that sometimes students want you to weigh in on the question of whether Anne Frank had white privilege.

News was slow to reach me of the death of Barbara G. Walker, pillar of the world of knitting as author of the "Treasury of Knitting Patterns" series, "Knitting from the Top," et al (still in print thanks to Schoolhouse Press ), and originator of slip-slip-knit.

I mentioned her..

Today I will drive an automatic car in the snow for the first time in 25 years. (I never broke the habit of pumping the breaks even while driving a stick shift with antilock breaks in the snow.) But I am from snow country. I will NOT be a Vancouver driver today. I. will. not.

Ok, so it's interesting to learn they kept pushing up release of Heated Rivalry. Maybe Harlequin did plan for a reprint timed for later release of the show. But you know who can rush just like the show rushed? A publisher, who still had weeks' notice.

It was such a joy to celebrate Hanukkah with Mandy, Kathryn and their son, Gideon. As Jewish New Yorkers across our city prepare to light candles and mark the seventh night today, I wish you and your families a Hanukkah full of light and love.

My kid has played competitive baseball for long enough that I, like, know a lot of sports parents. His roster for next season was just posted and I'm hearing from so many friends I've made in the bleachers over the years. For this very not-sporty book nerd, it's just wild.
