Anyway. Every so often I think about winning that award when I was 17 years old, and I chuckle.

Because I was always a writer, I was always likened to him in the family. But it was more the lore of the strength of his convictions that enamoured me to being a part of his legacy. His convictions, his warmth, and his sense of humour. I've always wished I could have known him.

I was raised in the shadow of my great-grandfather, who died before I was born. He was a Yiddish poet. His work was written about in the Forward. He was an early member of what was then called the Workmen's Circle (now the Workers Circle).

How delightful.

Thinking about it today I can't help but wonder, almost in alarm, if my alma mater still has such an award. I mean, looking back, it's hard to imagine how this vanilla suburban school ended up with such an award in the first place. Celebrating a kid willing to stick to their (socialist) convictions?

A non-professional highlight is I once sat on a board with a chair who asked me to be her Sam Seaborn. Best ask ever not only because that's literally the way she asked, but also because it's the one way I had skills to really help her out. It was fun AND I knew everything happening all the time.
