The basic duty of an artist is to communicate meaningful substance. It is not to *perform for* all people, it is to *speak to* all people, and sometimes the most important and valuable thing an artist can say is *nothing*.
"Any artist cancelling their show at the Trump Kennedy Center over political differences isn't courageous or principled—they are selfish, intolerant, and have failed to meet the basic duty of a public artist: to perform for all people"- Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi
Kennedy Center vows to sue musician who canceled performance over Trump name change
The Kennedy Center is planning legal action after jazz musician Chuck Redd canceled an annual holiday concert. Redd pulled out after President Trump's name appeared on the building.

No literary agent who is going to get you a deal is going to charge you upfront. They make a percentage. That is how it works.

If someone says otherwise or tries to "upsell" you, they are scammers.
Ok, since this has come up four times in the last three days:

REPUTABLE LITERARY AGENTS WILL NOT CHARGE YOU MONEY.

IF A LITERARY AGENT WANTS TO CHARGE YOU FOR AN "EXPEDITED ACCESS PACKAGE" THIS IS A SCAM.

“Authority is not given to you, fucking steward, to deny the return of the king!”
The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

"I am no man, you fuck!"

Gotta say it is jarring to see people including GenAI images with their writing posts. If you think nothing of using a generated image, I have to wonder if you've actually written the words you are showing off 🤷‍♂️

I can't respond in the thread.

My erotica with a disabled MC, with chronic pain, isn't hug-boxing but perhaps doesn't go far enough into the other side. But her emotions have been forcefully repressed.

In my queer fiction I don't make a perfect world though I understand why writers might want to.
vision, but it also undercuts a lot of the lived experience of queerness (certainly mine) to sanitize the pain & struggle imposed on us by society. Sure, there’s a place for that but if there’s no place for stories that hold up a harsh mirror to society, how/when do we push back against it?

This take is potent and clear and important.
there's a certain way certain people write fiction about disability that really sets my teeth on edge, and it's an approach that I can only describe as 'educational hugboxing'

in this, portrayal of disability must be constantly affirming, and it must use specific and correct terminology

Just a heads up: the "I run a book club/reader org and we can promote your book" scam seems to have leveled up again.

I've gotten a few lately where the scammer represents themself as being part of a longstanding community/org that actually *does* exist and *is* legit. They just aren't part of it.

Such a lovely response. Why can’t everyone have this kind of reaction to the idea of transgender people existing? Why are we such a threat?

(I actually know why, the question is rhetorical)
I'm actually delighted with my current gender but it is nice to know I have options!
John, once again I must ask if you would like to have a conversation about HRT.

"Do not pollute the common well."

AI has done precisely that, polluted the information ecology we all live in and draw from. Think about what YouTube was like just 3 years ago. Think about what search was like 5 years ago.

AI pollution is forced down every throat.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.
