This! In some cases, a family may seem ABA necessary. Who are we to judge whether the harm outweighs the benefits? Our job is to provide the facts and trust families to make the decision that is best for them. Sometimes, there aren't any good options on the table...
Now, being the parent of a high-support autistic son, I realize that these families are often desperate & almost always under-supported. I realize that they often have no choice but ABA therapy. I realize that it is traumatic to have supports denied by uncaring insurance companies. 8/

Why is this so hard for people 🙄🫥🤔
If you're a non-Autistic person
& an Autistic person is telling you about something they experience, or struggle with,
and it resonates with you...

PLEASE,
🚫 Don't say: "Well, we're all a little Autistic."

✅ Do say: "I find that relatable!"

we are asking you nicely, plz plz stop saying that.

Do you know that non-speaking autistic children and adults understand the words you say? Yes, so don't talk in their presence like they don't. And don't baby-talk to them or ask stupid questions. It is condescending, demoralising and deeply damaging to their sense of self worth.

Kindness matters.
But kindness does not = justice.

Civility counts.
But calling for civility is not the humane response to injustice.
Justice is.

Love is essential.
But love is not a passive, weeping bystander.

Love puts in work.

WTF have we allowed ourselves to become?

There are so many things here that people aren't considering when they make that first statement.

Such as, autism is a spectrum and there is no "one right way" for it to appear.

As well as, as adults, we have a lot more control over our environment, which can allow us to be much more regulated.
Don't: "You don't seem Autistic. I have a little cousin who -"

Do: "I'm surprised and maybe I don't understand. Would you consider telling me more about what being Autistic is like for you?"

We are all interdependent to some degree, and that is a good thing. We need to stop treating people who have higher support needs as if they are not their own person.
Even if you depend on others-
You still have the right to be treated as an
INDIVIDUAL

A LOT of artists are doing Black Friday sales this year. Like, way more than I've seen in years past. That tells me that SO many of us need people buying our art. Please please please buy from artists in the coming weeks and consider us throughout the year when purchasing gifts.

For real though, if I hear you say we are all a little autistic we will be having a talk about how harmful and wrong that statement is.
Don't: "We're all a little Autistic. It's a spectrum."

Do: "I find that relatable. I wonder what other common and differing experiences we have!"

That role can at times protect us from harm in the moment, but it also harms us over time.

It just means we've been trained to play a role.(cont)

This needs to be talked about more. Getting an accurate diagnosis needs to be more accessible.
Autistics are >9x more likely to die by suicide

>13x if you're a woman / AFAB
>28x if you're a child
These rates go up when unidentified as Autistic

Identifying Autism in people without intellectual disability is medically necessary

Lives are at stake.

I'll repeat it as many times as I have to.
Why Suicide Is All Too Common Among Autistic Adults
Suicide rates are extremely high among autistic adults. Reevaluating the way workplaces, families, and friends relate to the support needs of autistic adults might be the answer.

Nothing about us without us!
A thought on how to create a genuinely neuroaffirmative practice: screen all training offered and REJECT if it isn’t neuroaffirmative. I don’t just mean the language; I mean the concepts, assumptions and desired outcomes. Ask if neurodivergent people were part of the design of the training.
