This Bluesky account grew out of a Twitter account with the same name which I started in April 2022. Original purpose was to discuss Occupational Therapy but being identified as autistic sidelined that. Will focus more on OT but keep promoting neuroaffirming content too. Please like/repost/follow!

'Neurodiversity-affirming autism assessment and support: a scoping review' includes monotropism in its table of important neurodiversity-affirming theoretical concepts, along with the social model of disability, double empathy, stimming, stigma and camouflaging.

Misusing language about neurodivergence has happened in the past.
To keep doing it is linguistically oppressive in action just as it is with race, gender or religion.

Two Public Health Nurses - with decades of experience - approached me to try and find ways to support autistic children in schools accept / enjoy hearing tests. We had really productive conversations before being told by management to drop it.

Unless an organisation has a way to allow bottom up innovation, it will flounder. In the HSE I found change was only mandated in top down ways (only my experience, may not be universal).

Looks good. I think Occupational Therapists should attend things like this. Will there be any there?
Very nice upcoming workshop at the Center for Philosophical Psychology (University of Antwerp) on how radical embodiment unfolds in complex, “wild” real-world environments.

I have two say two jobs in the public sector almost broke me, and almost completely depleted my self esteem as an OT and even person! Terrible managerial failings. But now I’m in a new job and doing better so I want to get back into the groove of promoting OT.

This is what we’re up against
Not that much of an expert. Since the NHS own expert panel disagree.... ( Which btw is about 40 odd medical professionals)

Sometimes if you’re autistic your strengths and abilities can be used to condemn you; to a pattern of being misunderstood or not having your needs met because people decide you’re “high functioning”. #occupationaltherapy #autism

To be political for a minute, having worked in it for 6 years, I’d like to see the HSE be completely restructured and nationalised. It’s not fit for purpose, which is why I left it. This issue could be the one that determines if we have a United Ireland.

I’m really interested in how Brian Eno talks about surrender and control, but I wonder neurodivergent people’s experiences of these things needs a different kind of analysis. (I say this as an AuDHD person who immerses himself in Eno’s ambient spaces regularly.) youtu.be/uYyl37CKuCY?...

Really interesting analysis here.
Rigid thinking is not a universal autistic trait. In fact, some autistic people are more cognitively flexible than most nonautistic people.

So why is cognitive rigidity mentioned in the autism section of the DSM?

Here's my take...

So, to no surprise, 'brand new ABA' is still barely considering whether its goals are relevant to autistic people.
Sigh.

I walk around with Reflection, an app by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, in my noise cancelling headphones. After years of use I find it familiar and grounding. The sound bank it draws on is not as beautiful as some of Eno’s other work (Thursday Afternoon, or Lux), but it works well. Good at home too.
