As a kid in Austin I'd go on adventures in the canyon behind my house to find (and often capture) a lot of things. Alligator Lizards were always a big prize. I even kept a couple as pets for a few years before releasing back into the canyon.

Fun fact: I had a college radio show for one summer. My roommate and a friend shared the chair. Our show was called 'Salad was Murder' and was generally a pretty eclectic mix of indie and alt rock in the mid- to late-90s. I'm fairly certain I have a few CDs to this day that were 'borrowed'.
So great to see college radio in all its glory featured in today's NYT. I interviewed for the piece (WFUV is at Fordham, WFMU is independent, formerly of Uppsala--such is the way with radio, which has more acronyms than the New Deal): www.nytimes.com/2025/11/20/s...

Goods stuff here. We really need to be talking about this topic more. I obviously talk a lot about climate change issues. But this subsidence problem (for Houston & many other places) is also a very, very big deal -- *especially* when compounded by climate change issues.
Multiple Houston suburbs are sinking fast as a rapidly growing population is creating rising demands for groundwater. Here are the billion-dollar solutions Texas officials are working on to mitigate this mostly irreversible phenomenon.

Today is a good day to watch a rocket launch - sending spacecraft to Mars! It's also pretty cool that friends play key roles in this mission.

This is a use of AI that I can get behind. I remember in grad school at ASU that we had mapped out several routes across campus to maximize shade.

when this EQ occurred, I was literally in a paleoseismic trench along on the San Andreas Fault (Chalome Section). None of us felt it and we were so far out in the middle on nowhere, we didn't hear about it until the next day. We almost dropped everything to go to the site. But we had logging to do.
The M7.1 Hector Mine earthquake occurred 26 years ago today. That was the earthquake that led me to earthquake science!

In my previous career I used InSAR a lot. This mission has been a long time coming and it's very exciting to see it happen. This will be be a big deal in the InSAR world over the coming years. Even though I'm out of that game now, I look forward to seeing what it does.
Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...
