spend a lot of time thinking about @stephenkb.bsky.social's point that "reading comprehension", as a skill, is apparently something that a lot of people have just given up on online - eg it's hard to believe here that so many people can't see this is so obviously tongue in cheek, but alas,

With 868 measles cases so far this year, Alberta has now exceeded its previous high mark set in 1986.

2025 now has the most cases since 1979.

So I've had to expand this chart to include years prior to the modern-vaccine-program era:

The divide between the NDP's historic strength west of Ontario and their performance as a federal party in the same regions has always been something really dislike digging into.
And so the cycle continues.

Possibly unpopular (and biased) take: One thing left and progressive parties can do to get better electoral results in Canada is listen more to and include more voices from the western provinces. Without that you miss out on important insights that seem obvious in hindsight. 1/4 🧵

In a move I find quite surprising, studios like Warner Bros are getting a revenue share of fan-made AI trailers of movies like Superman instead of issuing DMCA takedown notices.

It’s fan-friendly, sure, but also risky, since fake trailers can easily mislead the public into thinking they’re real.

YouTube is flooded with fake movie trailers following AI's rise — and studios are making money out of bogus videos for 'Superman' and 'Gladiator.'

It’s early and the parties don’t have platforms out yet but is there any announced (i.e. with citation) significant economic policy difference between LPC and CPC? Not just of degree as with the tax cuts but opposite directions? Industrial carbon tax backstop is one. What else?

Spoiler for an upcoming piece. How the population grows matters for demographic-based housing demand. For example, 1000 net new non-permanent residents require fewer homes than from other migration-forms of population growth, as they skew younger.

We’ve got a competitive race. It’s the first election for both leaders of the front running parties. And the electorate is energized by important issues.
Canadian elections are volatile so who knows what train wreck we’ll get. But on day 1, these are about optimal conditions.

What happens next?

Carney will be invited to form a govt by the GG.

Carney will be the Prime Minister-designate during a transition period (could be really fast or a few days).

Once the transition is over, Trudeau formally resigns as Prime Minister, and Carney is appointed PM.
