I am aware that, as an investment management co CFO and COO, I’m perhaps the worst, or the best, person to opine on this. But here goes anyway 🧵https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jul/29/rachel-reeves-save-less-to-invest-policy-brilliant-or-disaster
Rachel Reeves’ ‘save less to invest’ policy could be brilliant for ordinary Britons – or a disaster | Hilary Osborne
People know about savings. But investing in stocks and shares? Not so much. Ministers have a duty to be clear about the benefits and risks, says Hilary Osborne, the Guardian’s money and consumer edito...

My word.
This duet cover of Radiohead's "Creep", between a son and his Shastriya Sangeet classically trained mother, is the mash-up I didn't know how much I needed in my life. Totally spontaneous sobbing may have taken place.

An absolutely ruthless evisceration of the plans for Parliament. Hard to disagree.

Parliament’s renovation is a scam — it will look like a Dubai hotel
Plans to repair the Palace of Westminster are joyless, expensive and mostly unnecessary. Visitors want gothic majesty, not a trip to Ikea

An absolutely accurate diagnosis of the Zombie Party.

This, actually, is the first Liberal policy from the LDs for a long time. I like it a lot - possibly enough to rejoin the party. Radical, reforming, attacking entrenched power, decentralising and devolving power away from London.

Excellent post by Mr Henig, worth a read “Compromises - openly discussed - on sovereignty, rules, trade, financial contribution, people movement and more are required. This is the pathway to a stronger, more predictable UK and Europe, and the basis for sorely-needed economic growth.”
With UK-EU relations temporarily out of the spotlight my latest article is titled provocatively - "UK trade policy has failed but a Customs Union with the EU is not the answer" - and explains that the UK now has to talk-the-talk if it wants more.

Given that the UK state is a rancid and corrupt zombie it's no surprise that repeatedly shoving in a fresh brain never works for long.

I see we're back to "Johnson resigned because of a party" and not because he employed a known sex pest, lied about what he knew, and more than half his cabinet resigned as a result.

Yes. People love to paint Corbyn and Starmer as opposites but there are throughlines over their tenures atop the Labour Party: corrosive, faux macho bullying, horrible appointments made for loyalty rather than competence, a sneering indifference to racism & gaslighting of its victims
(If No.10 and its outriders had an ounce of self-awareness, they’d be asking themselves why the government’s flaws are uncomfortably similar to the Corbyn leadership’s flaws)

This is a poor decision by the Government: the statutory weaknesses of the FRC can’t really be addressed by internal reform. It needs sensible powers and teeth.

Isn't some of the reason that if you allocate voters to quadrants in a 2 axis space, size of state vs socially liberal or authoritarian, the 'small state socially liberal' quadrant is not that well populated. I'm sure we saw poli sci posts making this point on here and X some time ago.
