Je voudrais, et ce sera le dernier et le plus ardent de mes souhaits, je voudrais que le dernier des rois fût étranglé avec les boyaux du dernier prêtre.

18 years ago today I took one of my favorite photos. I followed a small path behind a church in Pienza and suddenly : sunset on the slopes of Monte Amiata, from behind the palace of Pius II...

The World at One on Radio 4 is not a great advert for the #BBC - a daily banquet of right rants.

Friends of the Necropolis should get over themselves... literal gatekeeping from a bunch that can't cope with the current gates. This is a great idea and should be welcomed.

It's #stew night here. Made a huge pot of pork shoulder cooked in dry cider, with potatoes, parsnips, sage and rosemary. Then once that was out of the pressure cooker in went the 4 elements of Peposo : a big, thick-sliced joint of beef, red wine, garlic and a vast amount of black pepper.

This is just great.
We have lots of student notebooks containing sketches on anatomy, diseases etc, however, this one is by far our favourite. It shows Joseph Lister, father of antiseptic surgery, disappearing through a trapdoor after his lecture in Glasgow in 1868. Now that's how to make an exit!

Good to meet @lesleyriddoch.bsky.social in the Pot Still earlier this evening. Always good to discover someone is as interesting in person as their public persona implies!

A reference in the stucco decorations of the Chapel of St Casimir to the Order of the Ermine. Created in 1464 by Ferdinand I of Naples, the motto was Malo mori quam foedari - I would rather die than be dishonoured.
It seems correct Latin was not a skill of the Lithuanian designer...

As a vague gesture to the day I went to this.

It was very studenty. With some infuriatingky theatrical audience reactions from their friends. Exaggerated laughter (at frankly wierd points) instant screaming standing ovation etc etc.

The 1903 statue of Electra by Juozas Zikaras. She symbolises the arrival of electricity and enlightenment through technological progress and stands on top of the first ever Lithuanian power plant building (now the Energy and Technology Museum) in Vilnius.
