Famously my grandfather (back from the First World War with a shattered foot) didn’t believe in getting into debt, so he saved up and bought the house in cash.

I suspect very few postal workers are buying Battersea houses with suitcase of cash these days.

Not a good example perhaps: but I’m always interested in houses in Juer Street in Battersea. My mother grew up in one of these before the War (98 last weekend!) with her 2 sisters. My grandfather was a postmaster.

Worth pointing out surely though that *one* of the reasons that families are getting smaller *might* be the vast cost of housing (that forces both partners to go out to work and induces people to marry and have children later).

It’s a general problem with a lot of “Left” tax advocacy. Thinking that the problem is real, the motive is good, and therefore the solution is correct.

But that misses a step: what will the consequences be?

I've written about this: buff.ly/he6atH1
Why the Left struggles with tax policy
There’s a problem with a lot of Left-wing tax advocacy: it identifies a political challenge, and proposes a policy aimed at solving it. But the authors believe so strongly in the policy’s…

Im just rewatching “The Thick of It”, and when I look at the antics of Your Party I just think it *must* be some clever @aiannucci.bsky.social reality TV project?

When people post this sort of thing, I instantly worry that I will be too stupid to see it.

Oh.

If it’s necessary for people to believe that the money is paid into a fund, then it’s necessary to transition far more to a system where these *are* real contributions to a real fund. Certainly (outside the basic state pension) for other unfunded public sector pension arrangements.

I’d fundamentally disagree with an approach that lying to people is either right, productive or democratic.

I have little sympathy for rich pensioners, but suspect that landlords should be allowed to deduct mortgage interest costs once again, and I cannot remember the status of capital allowances for the self employed - but they should just be allowed to expense capital expenditure

I suspect that if she did that it *would* raise quite significant sums of tax - from everyone with pension, rental or self employment income for example, which will lead to howls.

That’s exactly why she should just abolish employees NI and roll it into Income Tax, and “abolish” Employers NI and just rename it Payroll Tax or some such. People need to realise that, yes, state pensions are just another benefit - not something you’ve “paid into”

The UK is making it abundantly clear that it is closed for business:

The costs of the UK’s Global Talent Visa looks a trifle high in comparison to competitor countries - largely through the Immigration Health Surcharge (which critics say is a form of double taxation as they contribute to the NHS through normal tax on their earnings)
