I’m just so tired of all of these assholes getting to claim the mantle of Real Americans when I live in an America closer to our ideals than any of them
I am tired of being told that the only Real America is the conservative one, the one that is attempting to force its will onto the places that the people I care about live. We have spent a decade attempting to try to understand the "other side", the fraction of America that support things like this no matter what, in an attempt to have things make sense in a way that we can find satisfying, but the truth is that they're just assholes. They're people who are jealous of the nice places and ways of living that come with embracing other people, and because they can't argue against the results, they lie to each other about how we're secretly miserable and then set out into the places we call home to try to make us miserable. These are sad, cowardly people who look to the force of the state to make them feel big. The reality is that the places that they want to bring to heel are the places that represent the promise of America better than anywhere. I live in New York City, surrounded by the peoples of the world, and I am better off for it. It is a city where you can eat around the world without spending more than $3 to get there, a city where you interact with and begin to understand other people just by existing here. My dad thinks that's why conservatives hate it, that a simple ride on the subway is enough to dispel the lies about it that people have either been fed or have chosen to believe. I have no doubts that the terror that is stalking Minnesota will find its way here soon, and we will be ready for it. And Minnesota, the place that has been the target of their terror? They have come together to support each other, people upending their lives to not just protest, but to organize and prove that they're stronger than the people who are trying to break their spirit. It's a beautiful reminder of what this country can be. We're taught as kids in Minnesota to be nice to each other, and to be kind and welcoming. You help each other through the long winters, and you lend a hand when someone is needy. It's the America you see in Norman Rockwell paintings, it's still out there. All of the houses in the neighborhood I grew up in became empty nests long ago, and as the parents of my old neighborhood friends move out to smaller or warmer places, they are being filled with Somali families. I worry about all of them in this moment, but I hope that the terror will pass safely for them and they can ride their bikes to school over the big hill I used to scale. I hope they get to have as nice of a childhood that I had, with their parents calling them home for dinner by standing in the driveway and yelling. I hope they get to live in an America that cares for them. That's the real America.
