random Virtua Fighter thought: Japanese tier lists consistently rank Lau pretty low in VF5FS and especially REVO (where he's down there with Lei-Fei for worst in the game atm), and i find the reasoning interesting to think about

That recent old Soul Calibur tournament made me realize something: i think the announcer in the arcade version of SC1 sounds way cooler than the one on Dreamcast. idk if that's a hot take i just like how Crunchy he sounds there

This was the time when i was deepest into the magazines and this is exactly right. Another element worth mentioning is PC gaming having its first mainstream boom with Wing Commander/Doom/Myst/The 7th Guest; the technology there made the 16-bit systems look old much sooner than the NES did!
1995 being referenced is kinda spooky, because its not often recalled how close the US was to another video game crash during that time. Aging 16bit hardware & a new generation of expensive consoles with little reason to own them (3DO, Jaguar, 32X)

My personal theory has been the transition from a primarily Desktop viewing experience, to a mobile one (around time they moved from Flash Player to HTML5)
I feel that a desktop encourages more active chat participation since you're right in front of a keyboard. Mobile is much more passive imo
