As a re-introduction to new followers, my lab at Wake Forest University studies mechanisms of regeneration in the phenomenal #axolotl with an emphasis on imaging. We think that visualizing cells and molecules in 3D/4D is vital to understanding how regeneration works!

Raptor recovery… Marsh Harrier, Goshawk, White-tailed Eagle and Osprey have all increased substantially over recent decades. Ospreys have colonised new counties at the rate of one a year, including Co. Fermanagh in 2023, the first breeding on the island of Ireland in 200 yrs #ukbirding #ornithology

Bats are the primary pollinators for agave plants.

Commercial agave, used to create tequila & mezcal, is increasingly being propagated via clonal "pups", because the flowering stalk is cut to increase the rate at which the "heart" (piña) grows.

This decreases genetic diversity....

Hurricanes feed off of warm water. Watch how quickly the eye of #Melissa collapsed as it moved onto land and over the mountainous terrain of Jamaica, and how quickly it is reforming now that it has moved back over water! I will be adding this radar loop to my earth science lectures.

Why did Indiana University attack and cut its own student newspaper?

Well, in a twist of irony any English professor would call clichéd, it turns out IU did it because they were angry about the students' reporting on a FIRE report naming IU as the worst public university for free speech in the US.
Indiana University banned its student newspaper from printing just days before homecoming weekend — after firing the paper’s advisor when he refused to censor critical coverage. That would be bad enough on its own, but FIRE is taking this one personally, as the Indiana Daily Student reported this hostile campaign was due in part to its coverage of FIRE’s ranking Indiana University as the worst public university for free speech. You read that right. The school’s response to the news that they are bad at free speech … is to censor the news. It’s ironic — and not just in the Alanis Morissette sense — that these actions will likely push its overall ranking even lower next year. At least we can’t fault them for consistency.

How can we see the cells that make up a living organism? Membrane-localising tags can drive fluorescent proteins to the cell's outer membrane, making their outlines visible. But the tags don't work well in all organisms. How do you find one for your species of interest? 🧵

(A) In wild-type stem cells, transcripts that are not coding or are mis-assembled with protein co-factors are routinely recognized and degraded. In the absence of SMEDWI-1, this selection process is defective, and aberrant RNAs can accumulate in the cells. Over time, this leads to a reduction in correctly assembled ribonuclear protein complexes (RNPs) such as the signal recognition particle (SRP). (B) The SRP functions to guide ribosomes that translate secreted proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum to continue protein translation and allow for appropriate folding and transport of the protein product. If such a ribosome is not correctly relocated, the protein product is released in the cytoplasm and marked for degradation together with the mRNA that produced it. Alternatively, the protein product may escape degradation and accumulate in the cytoplasm as a protein that is prone to misfolding and aggregation.

(around an image of the No Kings logo) IT’S OFFICIAL Nearly 7 million people have attended today's peaceful protests, which makes No Kings Day the biggest single-day protest against tyranny in American history! With more than 2,700 lawful and peaceful protests across all 50 states, No Kings Day was 14 times larger than both of Trump's presidential inaugurations (combined).
