With so many new friends here I feel I should reup the standard disclosure from the Other Place: I'm not the ex Tea Party congressman, or the Eagle's guitarist (although life's been good to me so far)

But I do get chatty about politics, saving democracy, and whatnot so hope you'll stay around!
When someone has made it a point of pride to rarely even wear a coat, it makes it more obvious when they've started taking blood thinners.

The thing to understand about this is that this catastrophe in the UK has redounded to the political benefit of the very same people and political movement that pushed for it! Extremely perverse.
I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)

I hope future generations recognize how quickly and strangely the contours of what counts as a political scandal changed for this president.
O'DONNELL: Why did you pardon Changpeng Zhao?

TRUMP: Are you ready? I don't know who he is

O'DONNELL: His crypto exchange Binance helped facilitate a $2b purchase of World Liberty Financial's stablecoin. And they you pardoned him.

TRUMP: Here's the thing -- I know nothing about it

Take a second to watch this clip. The whole answer is even worse than this makes it seem. 'I don't know who he is but my sons are making money on crypto' is not the answer he thinks it is.

I think this explains so much about that book and this debate.
Yeah, one thing about abundance is that it was pretty obviously crafted as an approach for *a party in power*. But then Harris lost and the printing presses ran anyway. So it was retconned from *policy* proposals into *campaign* proposals, which, as you can see, are weak.
one of the things i think is that policies answer the question of “what will you do” but they don’t answer the question of “why should i vote for you” and i think there is a tendency in this broad conversation to equate the two

The original voting behavior studies - in the 40s and 50s - did exactly this. And they found out voters knew ... Nothing. (The Michigan School study was vexed that voters 'didn't even know what Taft-Hartley was!)
I’ve been thinking a lot about a new kind of polling I’d like to see. We have polling that measures public opinion, which is obviously important, but I’d love to see a little more empirical work on public knowledge: what do voters know about politics and policy?

Legit took me a minute to know if this was real or if @nytpitchbot.bsky.social was now doing parody of the WSJ.
Anybody who has remodeled a home knows that building regulations can slow down even the most minor projects. Yet President Trump managed to tear down the East Wing of the White House with little notice in just a few days.

The Trump Administration has framed its assault on higher education as a fight against élite, wealth-hoarding institutions. But it also has far-reaching consequences for public schools, where federal money funds critical research.

Lots and lots of parents who voted for Trump have children in Special Ed- literally millions of them.

I wonder how those parents feel about these cuts…
There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.
