That's my biggest gripe about the latest round of The Discourse on 'what the Dems got wrong.' Voters have real lives and do not follow the details of party platforms. But they sure know what issues they want taken care of - and they judge which party is on their side and more likely try to fix it.

After years of handwringing, later studies found the better question was "Wait, so how *do* voters reason their way to decisions, even without on my knowing the details?" (Check out Samuel Popkin's The Reasoning Voter)
