"I wasn't quoting Hitler, I just independently came up with a similar phrase," is kind of exactly the defense you expect from the classical-Nazi staff you imagine writing for Harvard's conservative student paper
on the one hand this does seem like the inevitable outcome of giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to a self-selecting group of the most anti-social and self-regarding entitled assholes in an already entitled and assholic population

on the other hand it’s still pretty shocking

This scene is a highlight of the show
I'm deep in Season 3 of Deep Space Nine (a show I watched sporadically but never all the way through), and the Sisko/Nog dynamic is just so fucking good. Sisko has thought he had Nog clocked since Season 1, and he just keeps being wrong. Love it.

I'm always surprised at how cheap lobbying seems to be. Could the affected people spend a nickel each to make their health insurance cuts go away? For a dime each, can they get single payer?
One reason why Republicans won't extend expiring ACA subsidies?

Koch-backed lobby groups have spent over $1.1M pressuring GOP lawmakers to let 20M Americans' health insurance costs go up.

Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

Obviously mine is Probability Theory: The Logic of Science but I'm basic like that
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

"The constraint is the feature."

Very nice analogy here I think.
New post: The Electric Motor and the Drill
LLM chat bots are like electric motors: can do anything, bad at everything. The problem is UI/UX. AI should be more like power tools. I built a science planner around this philosophy. 10,000 scientists use it now. open.substack.com/pub/kording/...
The Electric Motor and the Drill - we use AI in the wrong way
Power tools are better than general purpose tools for most applications, my science planning app planyourscience.com is a result of this philosophy

Look this OU scandal is just nerd sniping. People all over my feed are talking about rubrics and grading policies when this is a straightforward Republican hit job on a trans person
Universities can't function if they're constantly running scared of an online cancel factory and spineless politicians who won't push back. Should this student have received a bad grade? Don't know. Should the governor of the state be commenting on it? Absolutely not. www.oudaily.com/news/ou-stat...

We combined psychophysics, 7T fMRI, and computational modeling of vision with placebo, 5mg, and 10mg psilocybin, in the same group of participants, to clarify the computational mechanisms of psychedelics. 🧵
