My piece in tomorrow’s Times about the toxic men in stand-up comedy. www.thetimes.com/culture/come...
The comedy scene is stuffed with toxic men — so I wrote a novel about them
Don’t Make Me Laugh is about predatory men in the British comedy industry — the author wasn’t lacking for real-life inspiration

"We were always told comedians are often sad or depressed – but if you meet many male stand-ups in real life they are really angry"

@jnraeside.bsky.social in Metro about her brilliant debut novel, Don't Make Me Laugh, and the scene that inspired it.

Had a go on a red carpet (brown floor). Delighted by the results. That photographer did some wizardry.

Add in the fact that narcissism is designed to defend against anyone seeing it’s an act - furiously denying anyone access to the twisted little core - and that it precludes self examination for the narcissist themselves, and it’s swimming-with-sharks time.

We should teach our kids this stuff like we do road safety.

(And to identify the behaviour in the first place. A narcissist is not what most people think - in the colloquial sense - and they’re all much the same, the boring little boilerplate toxic toddlers.)
How to deal with a narcissist. I hadn’t heard about this until yesterday. There’s some interesting data behind these titles and definitely worth reading up about it.

Amazing that, even now, we’re still nodding and buying the ‘sex addiction’ thing from men who absolutely cannot go without sticking their dick in another person. It sounds like something a child would make up.

This is a curious one. Sometimes the thing writes itself.
Reading @jnraeside.bsky.social's latest substack and I was instantly transported back about 40-odd years to the time where I had a small white portable black and white telly in the bedroom that I used to use a mini snooker cue on to change the channels. juliaraeside.substack.com/p/shes-writt...

After the Unbound shit show in which we lost a lot more than “some money”, I’m so delighted that Joel will get to relaunch his brilliant book - Be Funny or Die - next year in paperback. E-book will be out soon for those studying it on media courses, but the PB will be mega.
Good news!

Be Funny Or Die - How Comedy Works And Why It Matters - will live again.

E-book out soon. We should be able to turn that around pretty fast, fingers crossed.

Then a new revised edition, in paperback, with additional material. Which is exciting…
