I think we can say there’s definitely Noticing Things going on now, at the BBC. You might have got this stuff piecemeal here and there but now they’re just laying it out in blunt terms.
One question many in Westminster are now pondering is: what sort of politician will Sir Keir be without the man many say was his political brain? Because unlike almost all relationships between prime minister and adviser, Sir Keir did not choose McSweeney - it was arguably the other way around. In the Corbyn years when control of Labour had been lost to the left, McSweeney polled party members and decided that the lawyer and shadow Brexit secretary was his best chance for wrestling back control of his party. In what some claim was an elaborate and perfectly-executed deception, McSweeney managed to persuade pro-Corbyn party members that Sir Keir was one of them. And after winning the leadership, Sir Keir purged many Corbynites - including the former leader himself - and pivoted to a more centrist general election pitch.

Prosecutors began investigating Renee Good's killing, then Washington told them to stop.

Federal prosecutors had a warrant to collect evidence from Good's vehicle, but Trump leaders said to drop it. About a dozen prosecutors have since departed.

A while back, I wrote about the deprofessionalization of the FBI. Christian Gläßel and @ascharpf.bsky.social study how authoritarians build loyal security forces. They pointed to a sense of impunity being a key factor. That is what we are seeing now.

Gläßel and Scharpf pointed to three mechanisms that reshape career incentives: purges, the erosion of legitimate accountability mechanisms, and signals of impunity for loyalists. These patterns that are clearly emerging in agencies like the FBI, and mirror other authoritarian settings they have studied. Once an agency is corrupted: officers hope that the regime will reward them for shouldering the burden of the regime’s dirty work. The rationale is simple: extreme loyalty and repressive commitment offer a path to advancement otherwise unavailable to them.

Kash Patel, a podcaster selected because of his fierce loyalty to the President, told FBI agents not to investigate the details on Renee Good's shooting because it would contradict the President. Fact matter less than the King's opinion in a personalist regime.
But later that week, as F.B.I. agents equipped with a signed warrant prepared to document blood spatter and bullet holes in Ms. Good’s S.U.V., they received orders to stop, according to several people with knowledge of the events who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The orders, they said, came from senior officials, including Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, several of whom worried that pursuing a civil rights investigation — by using a warrant obtained on that basis — would contradict President Trump’s claim that Ms. Good “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer” who fired at her as she drove her vehicle.

I vårt avsnitt av @mediespanarna.bsky.social just efter att Good hade dödats diskuterade vi hur sjukt olämpligt det var att Trumpadministrationen varit ute med påståenden om det inträffade innan utredningen ens hade inletts. Vi trodde ändå att USAs rättstat skulle stå pall. Det gjorde den inte.

I’m sure nothing suspect was going on here, just as there was nothing at all dubious about the way the national press screamed hateful abuse at the main opposition party in unison until it put Peter and his friends back in charge, at which point they became extremely friendly and laudatory
