Big paper from @paigel.bsky.social in our lab:

Sensory feedback is always crucial for proper development, right? Wrong!

Crazier still, the motor system is the slowest part of a developing reflex circuit!

Surprises abound in this bluetorial c’mon along….

Sensation is dispensable for the maturation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex
Vertebrates stabilize gaze using a neural circuit that transforms sensed instability into compensatory counterrotation of the eyes. Sensory feedback tunes this vestibulo-ocular reflex throughout life....

Finally! The Hydroxychloroquine study by Gautret et al. has been retracted. I wrote a critical post about it in March 2020, days after it came out.

Excited to share my new paper implicating the 3D genome in epigenetic inheritance. We show that chromatin contacts are able to trigger epimutation in Drosophila. I'm very thankful for the support of Giacomo Cavalli, @psarkies.bsky.social and to all others involved!

Interchromosomal contacts between regulatory regions trigger stable transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in Drosophila
In some cases, non-genetic information can be inherited across generations. Fitz-James et al. investigate the mechanism by which such epigenetic information becomes heritable in fruit flies. They show that physical contact between regions of DNA within the cell is able to trigger the histone modification H3K27me3 to become heritable.

Our miRNA story is now in @science.org ! We found a microRNA, not a protein, that finally solved a long-standing evolutionary mystery of wing coloration in butterflies and moths. (1/n)
www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A microRNA is the effector gene of a classic evolutionary hotspot locus
In Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), the genomic region around the gene cortex is a “hotspot” locus, repeatedly implicated in generating intraspecific melanic wing color polymorphisms across 100 mi...

@maikbischoff.bsky.social uses the fruit fly testis as a model of organ sculpting. The adult testis is a long spiral shaped tube encased in circumferential muscle, but at the start it is almost spherical without surrounding muscles. During pupation muscle precursors migrate onto the testis 2/n

I posted this some time ago on the abandoned platform, but maybe it’s worth advertising here as well:

I’m hiring a post-doc (18 months) for our newly established group at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Warsaw.

Apply by 15.12.2024.

Wow! A method for clonal lineage tracing and cell fate modulation across early development...in vivo!
(1) How can we build complex structures from a limited set of progenitors and cell types? In our new preprint, we describe patterns of cell fate decisions during early development and (in some cases) identify molecular correlates of different behaviors.
