Interesting to see the Guardian's @dpcarrington.bsky.social weighing in on this. My take, as someone covering microplastics heavily for the past year (and currently sitting at a 200+ person conference with many of the scientists in question):

Il faut sanctionner ces fraudeurs. Et pas à la marge. Des vrais trucs. Radiation de médecins, perte de titres de Pr, amendes lourdes, de type rembourser tous les finacements alloués pour produire de la fraude.
Pour cela il faut du courage, et s'éloigner de la culture de la fraude et de l'omerta...

Yesterday Elon Musk retweeted "white solidarity is the only way to survive". In our numb overwhelmed media environment it barely made headlines that the world's richest man endorsed blood-curdling white nationalism. My brief writeup for @religiondispatches.org

Elon Musk Just Endorsed Blatant White Nationalism And the Silence is Deafening
On Thursday morning Elon Musk retweeted (with a ‘100%’ endorsement) a post declaring that: If white men become a minority, we will be slaughtered. Remember, if non-Whites openly hate White men while...

If an information company is clear and determined in supporting (not "saving') democracy, then it can be a home for good journalism. If not then the press must disengage. Now.

Humans have emitted 2750 gigatons of CO2 since the industrial revolution from burning fossil fuels and land use change. To put this in perspective, this is more than the (dry) mass of all living things on earth and everything humans have ever built combined:

And beware “solutions” that reduce fossil fuel use (reducing CO2) but instead use more land-based products, driving more deforestation (increasing CO2). Again, the goal is not only “get fossil emissions to zero” but also “get land emissions below zero.”

This is all so annoying.

Only until very recently, Canada had rules about where data could be stored and that it HAD to be on Canadian soil.

Like, if you were a contractor with the government, you couldn't use OneDrive.

Changing these expectations endangers all of us.

I never understood this argument with old houses. If your House is old and insulation only so-so, then theres even more to gain by a heatpump. Cutting 10.000 kWh by two thirds is a way bigger saving than cutting 2000 kWh by two thirds…

I say this as someone whose entire job is finding the narrow use cases in which AI is actually useful:

All the fear about AI, all the reluctance to adopt it, is entirely legitimate, and a product of the fact that it's been foisted on the public with no consideration of its negative externalities.
I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*

New model findings "highlight the irreversible nature of Arctic climate change even under aggressive CDR scenarios."

This means we cannot entirely fix our broken climate, even if we could remove nearly a century of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

And *this* means we must end fossil fuels.

The highest calling of journalism isn’t to tell two sides of a story.

The highest calling of journalism is to tell the truth.

And acting like a stenographer is a betrayal of your audience.
Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.
