Reviewing this Woody Allen debut novel (!!) just made me think about the horror of the 90’s…
A bespectacled, Jewish hypochondriac with literary pretensions and a creepy fascination with his stepson's girlfriend — Guess who?
Woody Allen's debut novel 'What's With Baum" stars a bespectacled, creepy, Jewish hypochondriac. Sound familiar?

excited to share a new website at this late date of Aug 15 to try to help us collectively prepare for back to school in the interpretative humanities classroom assaulted by the AI grift, so we don't have to go it alone.

The mass starvation & killing of Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli gov’t is a chillul hashem, a desecration of God.

Jewish leaders who criticized Zohran Mamdani for three words he doesn’t use should raise their voices loudly here as well.

Gaza is starving. Where are the American Jewish leaders?
A fear of being labelled antisemitic still deters American Jews and Jewish institutions from taking a position that is morally correct.

I just love this. Thinking how novels could do this.
This is delightful!
There was a rather charming trend in the 1910s to introduce the actor at the beginning of the film by showing them first in their street or evening clothes and then dissolving into the costume of their characters. Here we see recent stage import William S. Hart become a bandit in THE BARGAIN (1914).

Won’t be Harvard on the other side of this unless they act like they are what we imagine Harvard to be now. Right now.
“Harvard now faces one of the most consequential choices in its history: Submit to extortion and make itself complicit in the most profound assault on academic freedom and constitutional governance of our time—or go to court. The stakes are high, but the choice should not be difficult.” (Fixed link)

ICE deported Jerce Reyes Barrios, a Venezuelan soccer player who was tortured by Maduro’s dictatorship. He had applied for asylum in the U.S. No evidence he committed any crime. No gang membership. Then ICE sent him to a prison in El Salvador.

When I searched this initially a year or so ago two of my books had been used. Now it’s all five novels and several articles. AI’s eely fingers grow and grow and no creative is compensated.

I was in a room with a few octogenarians yesterday and I thought man, these people survived Jim Crow.

My grandfather was 12 when Emmett Till was lynched. His dad almost met the same fate in Georgia.

Amnesia will be our downfall if you don’t keep speaking up that history is right there.

Teaching this film this coming week. It’a perfect and timeless.
50 years after its debut, 'Hester Street' reminds us what it means to be a Jew in America
Debuting in 1975, Joan Micklin Silver's classic black-and-white film 'Hester Street' is a bittersweet fable of Jewish assimilation.

Re Gaiman it’s not hard. It’s not an art or artist kind of tug o war. If you can think of anything else while reading or watching a Gaiman text or show have had it. I will never be able to unthink it.

This post makes me think of truly countless interactions with older male writers I’ve had. It was just part of being female. In fact we were meant to take these comments as compliments.
In my late 20s, my then boyfriend took me to visit a family friend—a much older writer with a dreamy lake house.

After much conversation, the older writer turned to my then boyfriend and said, “She’d be a tough one to rape.”

I’m thinking about that a lot right now.
