In 2002, a newspaper organized a contest for candidates in the Warsaw mayoral election to build the largest city in SimCity 3000. Lech Kaczyński’s team won. He also became the mayor and then the president of the country.

This is, of course, false. One of the first non-animated foreign films (the animated ones are almost always dubbed) I recall having full dubbing was Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which premiered in Poland the same year as it did in the US. But since it’s a16z, the orientalism is almost expected.

A good example of this phenomenon is the coalition supporting the implementation of the Digital Services Act in Poland, which includes big business orgs, human rights NGOs, artists worried about copyright infringements, and many other groups united by the shared goal of tempering platform power

One underestimated aspect of the rapid development and proliferation of AI models is that Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tools have become ubiquitous. Using the search function in an app? Suddenly, it can find words in images. Opening a PDF of a scanned document? Boom, you can copy it as text.

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same
